Movies and OVAs Summaries |
I've been hinting at this for a while, so then I just decided to go ahead and do it. This site is mostly centered around the anime portion of Slayers, and even then only the three normal television series. Still, Slayers Special is important too, and so here's all of Lina's summarized anime adventures before her meeting with Gourry (except for Premium; it supposedly is a mini-adventure after Try; who knows?). |
Slayers Perfect (A.K.A. Slayers: The Motion Picture) [Movie 1] The first Slayers movie was called "Slayers: The Motion Picture" when it was finally sent to the US and dubbed. Why didn't it stay "Slayers Perfect"? No one knows, but "the motion picture" sure sounds kind of cheesy. It was released the summer after the first season of Slayers, in 1995. Lina and Naga manage to get tickets to the legendary mist-covered island of Mipross, home of the famous hot springs. And, unfortunately for them, home of many thieves and troublemakers, as well. These people go around declaring their rank and title, such as "The 7th-strongest man on Mipross", but are all easily defeated by the sorceresses. Lina and Naga also hear tale of a Grand Champion, behind all of the trouble and commotion. The bad news doesn't stop there. It turns out that the hot springs are fake, the product of some cheap formula which Naga's high experience with hot springs has uncovered. Behind these troubles are mysterious dreams that Lina has been having, narrated by an old man who asks for help, and seeing flashbacks of the apparent past of the love of a young man named Rowdy for an elf-maiden named Meliroon. The boy has the legendary Sword of Light in these "memories", but while he was away fighting elsewhere one day, the powerful demon Joyrock destroyed his entire village and killed Meliroon before Rowdy could get back in time. Trouble arises in full-throttle. The demon Joyrock has come back, which is why Lina had been having all of these unusual dreams of warning. She is offered two rewards - one by the king of Mipross, of which she had already gotten rid of the bandits for (the reward is money, of course), and a visit to a spring of rapid growth by the old man, who still visited her in her dreams. Lina intended to use that stream of rapid growth to help herself... Lina and Naga go to confront Joyrock directly, and some of the demon's horrible powers are seen when he sends disgusting skeletal zombies to attack them. Lina casts a Dragon Slave, but it fails, and she instead ends up getting attacked. Rowdy (the old man) shows up in person to aid them, and uses his power to sacrifice himself, and send Lina and Naga back in time to change the past. Lina catches up with Rowdy, the young man that that the old man in her dreams used to be, while Naga appears to have gotten lost in space-time somewhere. Rowdy manages to save his love, and Lina uses the Sword of Light to cast a Dragon Slave, amplifying the spell and slaying Joyrock. Lina joins up with Naga and they return back to their present time as magic of travelling backward in time starts to wear off. There, they can reap their reward! Or can they? Joyrock never attacked the island of Mipross, so the troublemakers never showed up in the first place. The king has no idea who they are, and so gives them no reward at all. And to top it all off, the stream is not one of rapid growth, it is one of rapid aging, so that Lina would probably have wrinkled into an old prune if she'd jumped in as she'd been planning. Looks like journeying to Mipross wasn't such a good idea after all... Slayers Return [Movie 2] The second Slayers movie was released in the summer of 1996, one year after the first one, and presumably right after Slayers Next had been broadcasted during the year. This is the one movie I don't have access to, so I can only assume that the Slayers Return manga that I have access to is exactly the same. The summary from that will be rewritten here. If anything's inaccurate, let me know. Basically, Lina and Naga were travelling when the villages asked for help to be freed from an organization. The leader, Garef, dreams to rule the world, although there are only 2 members in the organization. When Garef tries to find the treasure of elves however, Lina can't help but be greedy and join in. What they find, however, is no treasure, but the evil beast Lunegust. Lunegust, unable to be tamed by Garef, destroys a nearby city with its power. Firing a Dragon Slave at a golem toward Lunegust to act as a cannonball, Lina slays the beast. Slayers Great [Movie 3] The third movie was released in the summer of 1997, and presumably right after Slayers Try had been broadcasted during the year. Lina and Naga have come across a town that appears to worship golems everywhere. Any direction they look, golems are part of entertainment, of transportation, of life. Well, after saving a girl named Laia from a malfunctioning rampaging bull golem, they are drawn into a dispute between Laia's father, the legendary golem-maker Garia, and his son (Laia's brother) Huey. Huey is very taken by Naga, since she is exactly in the shape of the golems that he regularly sculpts. His father is repulsed by this, saying that golem-making is an art, not an extent of perversion. There are larger forces at work behind this. Both Lord Granion and Lord Heissen want to use the power of golems to gain power and take over everything. They're both sponsoring the golem tournament, so whoever wins will have their scheme fulfilled. Lord Granion manages to employ the famous Garia, and Heissen employs Garia's son, enlarging the dispute even more. Two very interesting twists were revealed as the tournament: One, the power source of the golems had been widely talked about; where were the golems going to get their energy from? The answer: Lina and Naga. The greedy Naga was led by gold coins into her golem, where she was then shut inside it, and Lina's golem was built entirely around her while she slept. Bizarre? Not as bizzare as... Two, while Naga got a huge two-hundred foot enlarged version of herself, complete with all Naga accessories (including a very very annoying laugh), called the Grand Goddess, Lina was stuck with "Piko Piko Lina-Chan". Far from being the over-exaggerated version of herself that Lina was hoping for, this squat doll-like golem undermined Lina even more! Anyway, a very long battle ensued, and Lina wanted out. After she'd been humiliated by the Grand Goddess a number of times, despite her numerous successes at staying alive, Lina had had enough. When the Grand Goddess made a hole in the back of the golem's head after a particularly powerful smack, Lina bursts out, free (she couldn't before because her magical power was being channeled), and then fires a Dragon Slave that destroys the Grand Goddess, Piko Piko Lina-Chan, and the entire grounds of the tournament. Surprisnigly, both conflicts had been solved from this battle. Garia and Huey saw that both of the golems they had made were pretty good, and so commended each other, while the two evil Lords had apparently come to a truce, having lost interest in their plans. Lina's golem becomes surprisingly popular figure of merchandise back in the town. Disturbingly, strange combinations of the Grand Goddess and Piko Piko Lina-Chan are made by Garia and his son as a result of their acceptance of one another's art. Slayers Gorgeous [Movie 4] The fourth movie was released in the summer of 1998. In this movie, unlike the others, all Lina and Naga do is eat food, destroy bandits, reap rewards, and generally have a good time. Not. They are of course drawn into another large dispute, and this one gets to be rather complicated. When Lina and Naga are in the middle of a meal, the townspeople suddenly all clear out, because of Marlene Calvert and her dragons. It turns out that she's in a conflict with her father, Lord Calvert, the ruler of the kingdom. Lina and Naga force Marlene and her dragons to retreat, but she has other allies back at her "base". Lord Calvert allies with Lina later on. He's tired of having Marlene rampaging her dragons about, and eventually the obvious question is asked: Why's she doing it in the first place? And the obvious answer, of coruse, is that Lord Calvert wouldn't raise his daughter's allowance... Still, a job is a job. Meanwhile, Naga has other plans. As usual, she has sided with Lina's opposing side. Marlene was hesitant to accept Naga as an ally, but Naga's own unlikely ally, her loud, confident laugh, convinced Marlene that Naga should indeed help her. Marlene, Naga, and the dragons weren't the only ones on that side. Naga was made into the fourth Lord of Heaven: Marlene, Thornfort, Geizneau, and Naga presiding. Supposedly, Thornfort and Geizneau also supported a higher allowance. Naga, Marlene, and Thornfort set out with the dragons, while Geizneau stays behind. Each side sets out in an attack, unceremoniously passing by each other while going opposite directions without noticing. As a result, they each arrive at the other's curiously completely empty stronghold. Marlene doesn't blow up her father's castle since it was also her home, and she saw no need without witnesses. Lina, on the other hand, gladly blew up Marlene's empty base, with Geizneau curiously missing. The two sides meet each other as a result of the explosion attracting Marlene's forces. Calvert had brought a long a small army of soldiers as well, and the soldiers and dragons began battle. Marlene always has had a natural relationship with dragons, and so commanded them easily. Unfortunately for her, however, the dragons all fled after Lina announced her name, all being too frightened to continue the fight (Lina's fame had probbly spread). Marlene retreated, and the "Lord of Heaven" Thornfort was unceremoniously defeated with a single fireball. Later on, Lina and Naga meet for a personal duel, resulting in a victory for Lina when she uses the "Look! Gold!" trick in the middle of a stream. Naga ends up falling over a waterfall... A more serious duel ensues when Marlene goes after Lina with her powerful Chaos Sword. Lina's fireball was deflected by it, but Marlene is still eventually defeated over time. Of course, Naga didn't die. Her return, however, is suddenly interrupted by the Lord of Heaven Geizneau. He said it was disgusting how dragons had been tamed by humans over the years, and that they would finally get to witness true power. Saying this, he transformed into his true form - a gigantic dragon with enormous powers. Marlene's dragons try to swarm Geizneau, but they are nothing but annoyances. Geizneau says that he's disappoinated that these disgraced dragons still attacked him. Lina cast a Dragon Slave at Geizneau to end the battle, but the spell had no effect against Geizneau's natural barrier. Since the Dragon Slave had been specifically formulated to destroy dragons, he'd cleverly built up this barrier as defense. When Lina and Naga ?realize that the Marlene conflict is important no longer, they join forces to destroy Geizneau. They come up with a strategy involving Naga as a distraction. Naga repeatedly bombarded Geizneau with ice spells, an annoyance that made Geizneau turn on his barrier overhead. Meanwhile, Lina cast her Dragon Slave at the consequently unprotected dragon, finally destroying Geizneau. Do Lina and Naga get rewarded? No. But on the bright side, I do believe Marlene's allowance was raised. Slayers Premium [Movie 5] If there was ever an odd one out of these movies, Slayers Premium is undoubtedly the one. After Slayers Gorgeous's release, and the silence that ensued, everyone assumed that there would be no more Slayers movies. In all probability due to an astounding amount of fan requests, Slayers Premium was released in 2001. However, there are several things odd about it. For one thing, the main Slayers cast is included, including Xellos. There's even a brief appearance by Naga, though why she suddenly appeared was probably just to please viewers. Secondly, the animation is amazing; it's the first Slayers anime item to be made using the help of computer effects, and so it's very high-quality. The oddest thing about it, though, is its length - half an hour. It was simply a short flick, about as long as a normal episode. Still, it still had a hit single and good characters. A seaside town's delicacy is octopus, and Lina and Gourry are seen chowing down on some seafood as the movie begins. At least, Gourry is. Lina only has one tiny fish. Anyway, they get into a fight into who should eat the rare octopus in Gourry's meal, and suddenly a man busts in the door looking like an insane zombie. He says only one thing: "Oc... to.... pus...." Obviously, something odd is going on. Well, it turns out that the octopi (the word "octopus" really confuses me) are tired of being eaten, and so are rebelling against the humans by the instructions of their "Protector", the "Great Octopus", who is apparently sealed in a jar. Anyway, eventually the octopus that was in Gourry's meal spreads a disease that infects the whole town, causing everyone to speak in octopus language. They understood each other, but the problem was still there. Lina was the only one not infected. Amidst this confusion, the octopi collected negative energy and gave it to their "Protector". To make a not-so-long story even shorter, finally the "Protector" was resurrected, but it was not an octopus. On the contrary, it thought octopi were also delicious, and began devouring them all. The Slayers were forced to retreat, and Lina knew she had to cast the Dragon Slave to defeat the monster. Chanting the incantation behind the rock for cover, the monster fired one blast at her from the water, destroying the rock and her cover. By now, she was too far into the incantation to back down. Right before she finished, another blast shot toward her. At this point, Naga rose out of the water, laughing her laugh, and was abruptly hit in the back by the blast, falling back over into the water and saving the day. What she was doing there is anyone's guess... Lina fired the Dragon Slave, destroying the monster, and the octopus curse was lifted. What became of the octopus problem? A simple disturbing solution. Octopi can regenerate their limbs, so the townspeople can simply chop off their legs and eat them, while still letting the octopi stay alive. What a happy... DISTURBING.... ending.... Like I said, some of the cinematics were really amazing. Of particular note were Xellos's improved teleport, and the immensely improved blasts (of the spells). Slayers Special [OVA Series 1] Confusingly titled, Slayers Special comprises of three OVA episodes: "The Terrible Chimera Project", "Jeffery's Knighthood", and "Mirror, Mirror...". Episode 1 involved a seemingly insane scientist who wanted to make the perfect chimera. Cloning Naga using one of her hairs, the resulting laughter and sight caused Lina to faint, and the townspeople to beg for mercy. He wanted to use Lina's head as the central head on his "perfect chimera". However, his plan fails when the Nagas become too much for anyone to handle! "Jeffery's Knighthood" told of a sad "wanna-be hero" named Jeffery, praised constantly by his overprotective warrior mother for his less-than-commendable "achievements". Lina and Naga are hired to help Jeffery on his quest to be a great knight by that mother, Josephine. Josephine apparently follows her son around everywhere, for whenever there's the slightest bit of danger or insult to her darling son, she immediately attacks, jumping for seemingly nowhere and then disappearing with expert skill to wherever she came from. When Lina and Naga gawk in wonder, Jeffery assures them that it's just a random stranger that's helping, and that it happens to him all the time. As Josephine assures Jeffery each time that "I'm just a passing stranger", Jeffery dutifully believes every word. Lina is absolutely amazed by how Josephine appears and then disappears with that expert skill, something that only a mozaku should be capable of. However, when she asks to learn those secrets, Josephine just instructs her to learn from Jeffery. They learn of a Black Knight that's been terrorizing the land, and eventually go to the castle for the final battle. The enemy proves to be immensely powerful, but when his helmet comes off, Jeffery recognizes him as "papa". The knight pales in fear, and then says, "That means.. she must be here..." Josephine makes her entry, and seems to have a few words to say to the Black Knight... Lina and Naga decide that their job is done. There appears to be a legend about a mirror that copies things... in reverse! Anyway, Lina and Naga naturally go after it, while a bad guy appears to want to do the same thing. Lina and Naga successfully make copies of themselves. While the copy of Naga is completely embarassed about her skimpy outfit, Lina has become somewhat of a wimp, and wants to solve problems instead of making them. The mirror is destroyed, but to no avail; the copies are still there. The bad guy makes a run for it, knowing that if the copy of Lina was a pacifist, the real Lina must not be all that nice. Slayers Excellent [OVA Series 2] Slayers Excellent's three episodes are "Labyrinth", "The Dreaded Future", and "Lina's Great Fashion Strategy". In the first episode, we learn of how Naga met Lina in the first place. Apparently, an inn Lina had been staying at had been burning, and Lina tried to rush back in to get it, but was restrained by a man nearby for her own safety. Suddenly, on the roof appared a scantily-clad woman that we know now as Naga, but whom Lina had never seen before. She challenges Lina to a fight, and Lina agrees, asking her to jump down and fight. Naga, realizing she had no idea how to get down, is helped down by a fireball from Lina - hence their first meeting. In the present, an inn had burnt down, and somehow word gets out that it was Lina and Naga's fault that the inn had burnt down. As punishment, they must investigate a nearby ancient labyrinth mansion to see why townspeople had been disappearing inside. It turns out it really is a huge labyrinth, and Lina and Naga are nearly scared to death by zombies that walked toward them slowly when they entered one locked passageway. Eventually, they encounter the source of the terror, the vampire Schteindolf, to whom the villagers have to sacrifice regularly. They'd been tricked! Lina and Naga were actually the new sacrifices! And they'd probably become zombies afterward... Lina's Mega Brand had no effect on the vampire in the huge chamber where they were battling, and Schteindolf says that he will now reveal his true form. Powering up to an immense terrifying muscle-bound giant, the vampire just keeps growing and growing as Lina and Naga shrink back, terrifed. Schteindolf looks for a moment like he belongs more in Dragonball Z than Slayers, but as is Slayers's trademark, nothing is what it appears. Suddenly, his power reaches its peak, and it concentrates into the supposed terrifying form - a bat. And a bat with huge, cute eyes. Lina defeats it by smacking it. And Naga decides to make them exit by shooting a blast through the ceiling - not a smart idea as they are under a domed ceiling, causing the entire mansion to collapse as the whole thing comes down on them. Ah, well, all in a day's work. The second episode involves another job Lina's been hired for, taking care of Admiral Fittsmeyer's rich daughter, Shilene, who is all too similar to Naga sometimes. Lina's reward money gets turned into Shilene's leisure money as Lina goes broke trying to accomodate all of the girl's wishes. While they're at an expensive hot spring, they discover a peeping tom, who Lina promptly beats up, and who Shilene laughs at and is brutal to, stepping on his head, etc. Shilene thinks Lina is incompetent when she really starts running out of money, and says she can just pretend she's being kidnapped, and ask her father to pay the fake ransom to get even more money. Lina, who can't take it anymore, arranges just that, setting up bandits who she'd spared to hold a fake kidnapping, and then leaving Shilene behind. The problem? Naga defeated the fake bandits, collecting the ransom. Now they have to go and find Shilene, and find that the evil magician behind the kidnapping is none other than the peeping tom they'd met earlier. Shilene appears to like her situation, ordering the magician (Alfonze) around to her likings, since Alfonze seems all too happy to serve her for some reason. When Naga and Shilene start getting in an argument, Naga ends up Shilene, who appears to be somewhat of a machochist herself. She said that no one had ever hit her before, and that Naga would be a great teacher. Both Shilene and Alfonze end up worshipping Naga, hence the episode's title. It's very disturbing to watch, especially Alfonze in that getup. Lina has a vision of the entire world's people looking like Naga. A living nightmare! To make a long story short, Lina and Naga are hired on opposite sides once again in a fashion dispute. While Lina is on the side of Tatiana and her followers, who are for a plainer, more traditional style of clothing in the town, Naga has sided with Marty, who go for the more rebellious look - namely, they all look pretty much like Naga. The issue gets pretty exaggeratedly bizarre after Lina and Naga's battle results in a tie when they cast spells against each other. There appear to have been secret robotic towers or robots built by both sides for just such a final battle, and Lina and Naga even fire more spells at each other. After the ensuing catastrophic war, policemen arrive, saying they've had enough of this long-term dispute. Lina and Naga, of course, manage to escape before they get into any more trouble. |
