Gordon's Gin, Sta. Lucia clash in battle of leaders
Brought back to earth by an Alaska Milk team that suddenly
found its form, Gordon's Gin tries to pick up the pieces of a once
immaculate slate when it goes up against a Sta. Lucia squad only
too willing to grab the driver's seat tonight in the PBA
All-Filipino Cup.
The 7:30 p.m. battle for leadership at the
Cuneta Astrodome will be preceded by the 5:15 tussle between
Mobiline and Pop Cola which is struggling to bounce back from
successive defeats that sent them into the cellar with Formula
Shell at 1-3.
It is expected to be another battle royale when the
Boars, the most explosive team in the conference meet the
Realtors, the second stingiest squad which won their last two
games despite all-time winning lows of 66 points.
The most that the Realtors have given up in a game so far this year was 83
points which, ironically is also the lowest output of the Boars this
season.
Coach Robert Jaworski's charges have averaged 93.3
point per game in four starts, making it the top offensive team in
a conference surprisingly decided by low scores. Except for
Mobiline's 107-102 victory over Formula Shell last Feb. 25 and
Purefoods' 101-95 overtime triumph over Pop last Sunday, no
team has gone beyond 100 points in 16 games this conference.
Despite this, the Boars are still expected to be the odds-on
choice considering that they have not lost back to back games
since losing the first three games of last year's Governors Cup
finals against Alaska.
Sta. Lucia, on the other hand, has not won
three straight games since ending the 1996 Commissioners Cup
with two straight victories and winning its first game of the
Governors Cup of the same year.
In a conference, the Realtors
have not won three straight games since starting the 1996
Commissioners Cup with a 5-0 card. But Sta. Lucia coach Chot
Reyes is banking on their robust defense to offset whatever
advantage the Boars have in size.
In their 91-99 setback to the
Alaskans, the Boars were badly outrebounded, 50-32, despite
their height and heft and Bal David, hero of their last two
victories was held to just seven free throw points and one field
goal.-MANNY ANGELES
