CNN's Pele's League

Week 5

Review - October 2nd
by Carlos Curro, Sao Paulo 55ers owner

Great weekend of football on Pele's League Week 5. Still, the only unbeaten team is the Sao Paulo 55ers, with a perfect 5-0. On the other side, the Sao Paulo Golpes Baixos have yet to get a single win, as they stay winningless. Let's check out the results:

Sao Paulo Golpes Baixos 39 vs. 41 San Juan Coquis
Cortland, NY Gradams Greats 31 vs. 22 Randolph Blue Devils
Sao Paulo 55ers 84 vs. 40 Oporto Eagles
Sao Paulo CCM 77 vs. 86 Ithaca Isolators
Sao Paulo Hard Plays 64 vs. 36 PIMP C's REAL G's

Sao Paulo Golpes Baixos 39 vs. 41 San Juan Coquis

This game was the most exciting of the week, as the winningless Sao Paulo Golpes Baixos tried to achieve their first victory of the season over the San Juan Coquis, who were 2-2 before the game. But the Golpes Baixos will have to try again next week, as the Coquis defeated them by only two points. QB Neil O'Donnell scored 22 points to lead the Coquis, while K Mike Hollis and the Cowboys Defense played very well for the Golpes Baixos. The problem for the Sao Paulo team was the struggling of QB Brett Favre and RB Eddie George.

Cortland, NY Gradams Greats 31 vs. 22 Randolph Blue Devils

On a low scoring match, the Gradams Greats beat the Blue Devils, 31-22, and the decisive factor was, believe it or not, QB Kent Graham of the Arizona Cardinals. His 10 point performance was key for the Gradams Greats, as all their RB's and WR's scored only 2 points each. K Pete Stoyanovich added a solid 8 to the team total.

The Blue Devils are 1-4 now, and they have the worst attack in Pele's League. The only bright spot this week for them was K Ryan Longwell, who scored 10 points, but all other players are really struggling right now, including QB Mark Brunell, who had a minus-1 performance.

Sao Paulo 55ers 84 vs. 40 Oporto Eagles

In the first weeks, the Sao Paulo 55ers attack was below average, but they still managed to win games. Now, their offense seems to be getting hot, as for the second straight week they scored over 80 points, this time beating the Oporto Eagles by a margin of 44 points.

The 55ers were led by great performances by the 1-2 punch of RB's Terrell Davis and Robert Smith (13 and 17 points), along with TE Shannon Sharpe first really good game of the season. QB Steve Young also continues to improve after his concussion on opening week, and he played very well on Monday Night.

WR Jake Reed was the most productive player for the Eagles with 11 points, but the rest of the team didn't come through with enough points to beat the 55ers.

Sao Paulo CCM 77 vs. 86 Ithaca Isolators

The Ithaca Isolators scored 86 points, a week high, to defeat the Sao Paulo CCM, who scored 77, third in scoring this week. So, in this offensive minded, high-scoring matchup, only 9 points were the difference for victory.

QB John Elway's 20 points opened a very good performance by the CMM, along with RB Adrian Murrell, K Al Del Greco and the 49er Defense, each one with 10 points scored in this week. Their receivers also played well, as Irving Fryar and Joey Galloway added a total of 15 (8 and 7, respectively).

But it wasn't enough, as the Isolators were on fire, as QB Jeff George had a 28-point performance. He threw two TD passes to TE Rickey Dudley (16 points), and RB Napoleon Kaufman also played very well (12 points), as the "Raider Attack" of the Isolators managed to get the best of this great match.

Sao Paulo Hard Plays 64 vs. 36 PIMP C's REAL G's

The REAL G's started very hot, just as the Hard Plays did. But the Hard Plays were coming off their only loss of the season in week four, and the REAL G's had lost two straight coming into this game. So, both teams were looking to rebound and bounce back to the top.

The Hard Plays took advantage as the REAL G's started QB Rob Johnson, who did not play, and opened up a lead for good, as WR Michael Irving scored 10, Robert Brooks added 6, and on Sunday Night, QB Brad Johnson added a very solid 20-point effort. On Monday, RB Garrison Hearst finished the game, scoring 11 points.

Even playing without a QB, the REAL G's would have a chance, but the offense struggled. If that wasn't enough, their best RB, Tiki Barber, left the Giants game with an injury. RB Raymont Harris played  poorly against Dallas, and their receivers, J.J. Stokes and Jimmy Smith, had subpar games, with only 2 points each. After a very good 2-0 start, the REAL G's are now in a 3 game losing streak.
