Global Football League Week 5 Reviews - Tuesday, September 30th Week 5 on Global Football League wasn't as exciting as last week, as this time we had more blowouts than close games. As a matter of fact, only one game was decided by less than 10 points, but what a close finish in that one! The solo leader in GFL right now is The Lounge Lizards, who lost only one game so far (4-1). We also have five teams tied at 3-2. Very, very competitive league! If you are covering my predictions, you might have noticed I was 1-4 in my picks last week (Week 4). So if you thought I made bad predictions, think again! This week I went 0-5! (Better stop predictions. Might start a Carlos Curro jinx, the one I pick never wins!) New London Wacker Boyz II 38 vs. 58 The Lounge Lizards (NFL Bye teams on Week 5: Buffalo, Indianapolis, Miami, New England)
New London Wacker Boyz II 38 vs. 58 The Lounge Lizards In the game of the week we would find the team to lead the West. The Lounge Lizards played better than the New London Wacker Boyz II, defeating the Boyz by 20 points, and assuming not only solo first place in the West, but also solo first place in the GFL. The Lizards (4-1) again had a magnificent performance by QB Jeff George, with 20 points, and a nice return to the lineup by WR Irving Fryar (12 points). The Boyz (3-2) didn't produce great numbers, with WR's Cris Carter and Bert Emanuel being the only nice performances in the team. With this win, and last week win over the Travelers, the Lizards have made a statement, defeating two divisional rivals and showing that they have a team to run for the championship. The rematches against those two later in the season will be very important for all teams in the West.
Sao Paulo Travelers 43 vs. 46 Crown City Thorns The Sao Paulo Travelers started 3-0, but now they are starting to show some problems, as they lost for the second straight week, and again, no TD production in the starting lineup, except by QB John Elway's passes. The Crown City Thorns beat the Travelers by only 3 points, in a game that could have gone the other way if the Travelers owner had made better starting lineup decisions. "No more watching players on Monday Night!", said Carlos Curro, the Travelers owner, upset with K John Kasay performance. The Thorns (3-2) took first place in the East with the win, tied with two other teams. They relied mostly in the kicking game and their defense to win this battle, as they combined for 30 points. QB Mark Brunell first start in GFL wasn't a good one, as he had a minus-1 performance. But it didn't matter. WR Joey Galloway also played well. As for the Travelers (3-2), they've lost two in a row, and both games by a margin of less than five points (2 points last week against the Lizards, 3 points this week). They are struggling really bad, as they haven't scored a TD (rushing or receiving) in three weeks! The main reason is the struggle of RB Eddie George. Teams that play against Tennessee might have realized George is their one and only weapon, as Steve McNair has a long way to go before he can worry defenses. WR Tim Brown also hasn't scored lately, after a great opening week performance. Everything is going wrong for them, as their bench outscored their starters with ease! Even then, they still had a chance for a come from behind win, as the Travelers had RB Ricky Watters on Sunday Night, and K John Kasay and the 49ers defense on Monday. But they all struggled... They came close within 3 points, but couldn't get a FG or anything more than 10 points by the defense. Two tough losses for the team, by very thin margins.
Screaming Meanies 67 vs. 90 Sao Paulo Big Passaros Some people were worried about the lack of offense by the Sao Paulo Big Passaros. They started 2-0 wit a powerful, high scoring offense, but in the last two haven't been so good. Week 5 was a breakthrough for the Passaros, as they needed a win over the mighty Screaming Meanies to force a tie in the first position for the GFL East. They not only got the win, but they scored 90 points. The Meanies (3-2) played well, scoring a very sound 67, but the Passaros (3-2) were just unbelievable. Coach Luis Curro had a game time decision to start RB Bam Morris, playing for the first time in NFL and GFL. He scored only 4 points, though. The story for them was in the aerial attack and the defense: the Cowboys D scored 19, and their WR's plus the TE combined for an amazing 53 points! Leading the way was WR Tony Martin, with 3 TD's, 25 points. TE Rickey Dudley added 17. The Meanies could have beaten a lot of teams with this performance, but the "Run 'n' Run" couldn't beat the conventional lineup of the Passaros. Even then, two of the three backs played remarkably well, as both Terrell Davis and Robert Smith scored more than 10 points each (18 and 13, respectively). The kicking was also very good, with Jason Hanson's 17 point performance. But the Meanies couldn't match a career day by the Sao Paulo team.
New York Freaky Fat Cats 52 vs. 28 Kauai Rainbows The New York Freaky Fat Cats got their second win of the season over the "always struggling" Kauai Rainbows, who scored a worrying 28 points this week. There were good news and bad news for the Rainbows (1-4). The good news is that TE Shannon Sharpe finally played well, in fact, he had a career high in yards this week, along with a TD. The bad news is that he played alone this week. QB Brett Favre continues to struggle with the Green Bay Packers, throwing a lot of costly INT's. The Rainbows might be relying too much in the Broncos offense and defense, as they suffered this week by bad performances by the two wideouts, Ed McCaffrey and Rod Smith. It's fair to say everyone but Sharpe played well short of their true potentials. The Cats (2-2-1) took advantage of that struggle and opened a huge lead, defeating the Rainbows with no sweat. WR Jake Reed (12 points) was awesome on Sunday Night, along with their combination of QB Jeff Blake and WR Carl Pickens, each with 9 points scored. The Cats are now only half a game behind a first place position in the highly competitive Eastern Division.
Da Kine Hawaiian 43 vs. 67 Bloody Sabbaths The Bloody Sabbaths were winningless and they had the worst attack in GFL; they were battling a not so sound Da Kine Hawaiian, a team that had only one win coming into this matchup that would decide last place postion in the Western Division. And applauses for the Sabbaths (1-3-1), as they got their first win of the season in a very good performance, 67 points, tied for second best attack this week. Although their offense is still ranked last in GFL, they now have something to cheer about, as QB Kordell Stewart had a monstrous game, and he is one of the few QB's today that score rushing TD's, which means 6 points instead of the 4 awarded in a TD pass. But the "franchise player" is undoubtedly RB Napoleon Kaufman. He's been very steady week after week, and scored 14 points in this game. The Hawaiian (1-4) are now dead last in the West and tied with the East worst team, the Rainbows, for worst record in the GFL. Although QB Steve Young and RB Terry Kirby had decent performances on Monday Night, they couldn't even get close to the Sabbaths. The problem was in their other RB's: Jerome Bettis and Mike Alstott scored only one point each. Yet, another loss for the "Run with No Gun".
