Fantasy Football '97

ESPN's Global Football League

Week 4

Reviews - Thursday, September 25th
by Carlos Curro, Sao Paulo Travelers owner

Monday Night Football has never been so important before. We have our first GFL tie of the season, thanks to a blocked Field Goal and a Touchdown as time expired. Nevertheless, some other games were also decided on Monday, as the Travelers lost a very close one to the Lizards. Now we have a total of 3 teams tied for first in the West, and the Meanies as the single leader in the East, all four at 3-1.

Let's check the results. What a finish on Monday... I just can't put it out of my mind (probably the Freaky Fat Cats and the Big Passaros cannot, too!).

Sao Paulo Travelers 60 vs. 62 The Lounge Lizards
Screaming Meanies 78 vs. 58 Da Kine Hawaiian
New London Wacker Boyz II 43 vs. 37 Sao Paulo Big Passaros
Crown City Thorns 56 vs. 86 Kauai Rainbows
New York Freaky Fat Cats 56 vs. 56 Bloody Sabbaths

(NFL Bye teams on Week 4: Arizona, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington)

Sao Paulo Travelers 60 vs. 62 The Lounge Lizards

This was the game of the week, as it featured the only reamaining undefeted team, the Sao Paulo Travelers, against second-place in the division The Lounge Lizards. A win and the Lizards are tied at first; a defeat and they're two games behind. Very important match!

The Travelers were doing well on Sunday, except from an awful performance by RB Eddie George, who only managed two points and let down the Travelers single back version of the attack, as starter RB Ricky Watters had a bye. WR Chris Calloway had his second chance, and again he let the team down (2 points). The Lizards benefited by great performances by QB Jeff George (19 points) and the Patriots D (18). But as Sunday games were in the books, the Travelers had a six point lead, with RB Natrone Means been the only hope for the Lizards on Monday Night.

It's "farewell" for the Travelers' luck. It didn't took 5 minutes into the game for Means to score a TD and get 20 yards. He finished with only 8 points, though, making the Lizards win a very close 62-60, decided by 40 yards. The Lizards and the Travelers are both at 3-1 now, and no more perfect season talks anywhere in the league!

Screaming Meanies 78 vs. 58 Da Kine Hawaiian

The Screaming Meanies were hoping the "Run 'n' Run" could be the starting of something big. It certainly was, as they smashed the Da Kine Hawaiian, 78-58, with great performances by all three RB's in the lineup, and also a good performance on Monday Night by their only receiver, Jimmy Smith of the Jaguars. Led by RB Terrell Davis (16 points), they scored a total of 40 points among RB's!

The Hawaiian played tough. They had a very good performance from QB Steve Young, and a great 17 point effort by upcoming FB Mike Alstott of the Bucs on Sunday Night. But the Lions defense scored only 2 points, K Olindo Mare only 3, and WR Shawn Jefferson scored the big zero... That really hurt the Hawaiian, who drops to 1-3, as the mighty Meanies lead the East in a solo first place at 3-1. Also, this is the first win of the 3-RB lineup against a non-3-RB team.

New London Wacker Boyz II 43 vs. Sao Paulo Big Passaros 37

The Sao Paulo Big Passaros seemed headed for a big season as they started 2-0 with a powerful attack. Led by QB Drew Bledsoe, they seemed to be the team to beat. But, at Week 4, they're looking more as a sparring squad than a playoff contender, as their offense struggled for the second consecutive week, scoring only 37 points this week, and losing 43-37 to the New London Wacker Boyz II. The Big Passaros would certainly like to see bye weeks finish as soon as possible.

In this low scoring contest, it was the Boyz attack that put them ahead by 7 points after Sunday's games. The Passaros still had some hopes, as RB James Stewart would play on Monday Night. But that didn't matter, as Natrone Means carried all the load for the Jaguars, for the disgrace of both Sao Paulo teams, who lost by very thin margins this week. The Passaros (2-2) have dropped two in a row, and the Boyz jumped to 3-1 and a tying position for first place in the West with the Travelers and the Lizards.

Crown City Thorns 56 vs. 86 Kauai Rainbows

The Crown City Thorns overcame a slow start to win their last two. The Kauai Rainbows were still looking to get their first win of the season. Well, the Thorns streak is over, as the Rainbows attack came alive and exploded for 86 points, defeating the Thorns by a margin of 30!

Led by a finally great performance by QB Brett Favre, the Rainbows also had some help in the WR department, as both Denver players (Ed McCaffrey and Rod Smith) played very well, along with Baltimore's Derrick Alexander. Single-back Ki-Jana Carter added 11 points. Their big question is TE Shannon Sharpe - he hasn't played well a single week this season, in contrast to last year's wide receiver like performance. But even then, the Rainbows (1-3) slump is finally over, and the Thorns (2-2), whose only bright spot was WR Antonio Freeman (18 points), meet defeat again, something they hadn't smell since opening week.

New York Freaky Fat Cats 56 vs. 56 Bloody Sabbaths

This wasn't previewed as a very important game this week (sorry, owners!), as it faced two slumping teams: the New York Freaky Fat Cats, who started 1-2, and the Bloody Sabbaths, winningless. But, surprise, surprise, it turned out to be one of the most amazing finishes in Fantasy Football History!

As Sunday's games developed, the Freaky Fat Cats jumped ahead with good, solid scoring from RB Barry Sanders and WR Jake Reed. The Sabbaths fought back, relying on K Cary Blanchard and RB Adrian Murrell. So, as Sunday ended, the score was 56-44 in favor of the Cats, with only the Jaguars Defense to play for the Sabbaths on Monday.

The game developed very normaly, as both teams exchanged scores, and the Jaguars D got some sacks. But when they allowed the 21st point, no more bonus points for low scoring certainly gave owner Marc Hilton some relief. And he knew, with the Steelers trying to get the go ahead Field Goal, that the Sabbaths had to overcome a 5 point deficit to at least tie the game. What could happen at most? A fumble? That's only two points. An INT? Two points. A sack? one point. And the Steelers were moving the ball very well and very CAREFULY also. So, as they finally line up for the field goal, Cats fans started to celebrate...

Then, the most amazing thing happened. Disgrace struck the Cats. They blocked the Field Goal. Coach Marc Hilton: "Well, ok, that's two points...". A Jaguar player picks up the loose ball. "Well, ok, they are winning, he'll just fall on the ball, time has already expired, the game is over... Hey... NO! WHAT THE HELL IS HE DOING??? NO, NO, STOP!! FALL, YOU SON OF A B...!!!". Touchdown Jaguars. Three more points, for a total of five in less than 10 seconds by the Defense!

Yes, the Sabbaths come from behind to tie the game, 56-56, in the last ten seconds with an unnecessary TD by the Jaguars D, in one of the most thrilling and unexpected finishes in Fantasy Football history. This is one to be remembered.

(Coach Marc Hilton's thoughts are purely fictional... Altough, if he watched the game, it was certainly something like that!).
