"Video killed the radio star..." - The Buggles.

These are a few resources I've come up with to help teach AS Media for the OCR syllabus. They might be useful if you're doing the same (or a similar) spec., or they could be adapted for GCSE - Huw.

Media Terminology Handout - Blank(ish) sheets for kids to fill in with new terms.

Media Timeline - Single sheet, could be used for kids to fill in post-brainstorm

Shot Analysis Sheet - Single sheet, general use, for storyboarding-in-reverse...

'Cropping' handout - Use early, to get kids thinking about how framing influences meaning. You'll need several photos to go with this.

Semiotics Handout - 1 - General intro - one sheet, but lots of basic concepts touched.

Semiotics Handout - 2 - Single sheet, looks at anchorage.

Signifier/Signified/Referent worksheet - follows up the previous two sheets. Ideal homework.

Connotations worksheet - Again, worksheet to follow up earlier handouts.

Semiotics Handout/Exercise - Kids use this handout as a brief to produce a shampoo advert. This worked quite well for me.

'Eleanor Rigby' worksheet - Use this to get kids to storyboard the opening shots of a pop video, accounting for composition, M-E-S, etc. Worked okay with my lot.

Sound Handout - General intro to sound. One side of A4.

Sound Worksheet - 'Main Action' events to be filled in by teacher (then photocopied) in advance. Kids to watch TV extract and make a note of all the sounds they hear (applause, dialogue, laughter, music, etc.) on different 'tracks' - exercise to make kids appreciate complexity of the soundscape in TV.

Writing Style Handout - Exercise to improve kids' writing style and use of technical terminology. Good for homework.

Chat/Discussion Show Design Project - Sheet 1 of 2 - student briefing sheet. Good, bulky homework. Use next sheet to photocopy on to the back of this.

Chat/Discussion Show Design Project - Sheet 2 of 2 - Graphical planning sheet for the above.
