Because of the rules of the Electoral College, there are great disparities in the relative influence of a person's vote for President cast in different states . In a democracy or a republic you would think that a vote cast by a person in one state should be equal to a vote cast by a person in another regardless of what state he lives in or his race, ethnic heritage or religion. Sadly, this is not so. Would you believe that a vote cast in Alaska is worth about four votes cast in Florida? Or that a vote in Texas is worth only a third as much as a vote in Vermont?

This
cartoon shows quite vividly how far we are in America from the democratic ideal of one person, one vote. It shows the relative influence of a vote in each state compared to the influence of a vote in Florida. The figures and font sizes are scaled to the value of a person's vote in each state. Under one-person, one vote all these figures should be the same size. The font sizes should also be the same.

However, this is no laughing matter. If Americans are not equal at the ballot box, they are not equal under the law. How can I be equal to other Americans if my vote for president isn't? The consequences of such inequality can be disasterous to a people or a nation. It was because Americans were not treated as equals by the British that we declared our independence from England and created the United States of America. It was the unequal rights of slaves that led to the US Civil war.
