While these numbers may seem abstract, their effect on presidential elections is very real nevertheless. For the Hispanic population of some 21.7 million voters, it is as if 2.1 million voters are permanently disenfranchised. For the 24.5 million African-Americans it is as if 1.2 million African-American voters never make it to the polls in every election no matter what the turnout. For the Jewish population of some 4.4 million, it is some 440,000 Jewish votes cast but not counted in every election. For the 8.2 million Asian/Pacific Island voters it is 370,000 votes cancelled out. These disenfranchised votes add up to 5-6 million votes . This is equivalent to the combined voting age population of the 10 states of Wyoming, Alaska, Vermont, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Delaware, Montana, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. This amounts to 20 percent of the states are disenfranchised by the Electoral College in every Presidential election!
(See map of states.)
The disenfranchisement of voters in Florida in the 2000 election year pales to insignificance compared to the disenfranchisement built into the system by the Electoral College which we all endure election after election.
(See map of Florida.)
