DAY 11: SUNDAY, AUGUST 28th (Continued)
The Saranac River again for a mile or so, and we came out upon Middle Saranac Lake. This is the lake that the guide-books say is usually very tumultuous.
We found it so,- and more so. Hugged the southern shore for two miles, and, as usual, found the outlet on the northern side, and pulled over through two inches of water, amidst tall grasses and cat-tails, which somewhat broke
the force of the heavy surf.
The Saranac River once more for three miles,- a narrow winding stream, with a good current. Midway we came
to a lock over some rapids. Large boats take the left-hand channel, small boats the right, where there is a board dyke, along which you walk and tow your boat through the rapids, which here are considerable.
