DAY 11: SUNDAY, AUGUST 28th (Continued)
Emerging on Lower Saranac we found a choppy sea, especially while passing the "narrows". Six miles down the southern shore, dodging islands, which are thick
and precipitous, we rounded Eagle Island, one of the largest, and camped at four o'clock on a small islet immediately to the north of it, and in full view of the Ampersand and
Algonquin hotels, a mile to the northeast.
Our map tells us it is one of but three islands in the whole lake that are not State land, but there is a stone fire-place
here and plenty of firewood, to say nothing of the remains of a bough-bed. Think we shall stay here all day and rest up.
