DAY 14: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31st (Continued)

Finally reached Big Tupper Lake at three, and had a very hard time locating a camp site. The shores are rocky and the forest practically unbroken. Could scarcely discover a square of level ground big enough to pitch a tent on. When we did find this, the third point on the northwest shore, the soil was found to be so thin as to forbid the driving of stakes, and our tent is anchored to handy trees on all four sides. The ground beneath was only fairly level, but by dint of generous use of boughs we obtained what promises to be a good bed.

Dinner at four,- fried pickerel, Indian pudding with maple syrup, tea. The raisins we finished at noon. There is scarcely five pounds of grub in camp, all told, so I guess it is up to us to go home tomorrow in any event.

The Lower Raquette

No longer silvery,
though even more tranquil.
