DAY 1: THURSDAY, AUGUST 18th (Continued)
Arriving at the Bald Mountain House at four, we saw Mr. Merriman and his wife and left them for a tramp up Bald Mountain. The trail is comparatively easy, and is readily walked in twenty minutes. Upon one's arrival at the summit, where Verplanck Colvin has placed a monument
and a flag-pole, the vista of the lake and forest that breaks upon one's view is one of great beauty.
Spread out like a map at your feet is the entire Chain of lakes, looking like links in a lady's necklace, to the west a glimpse or two is had of the lakes of the North Branch, or Moose Chain, to the southeast Little Moose Lake is plainly visible, while to the north and east can be seen the whole expanse
of Fourth Lake, a bit of Seventh Lake, and Blue Mountain, Mt. Ampersand, and the other western Adirondack peaks looming up in the background. And all around are miles and miles of apparently impenetrable forest, bathed in the soft glory of the setting sun, and looking cool and inviting. Scarcely a building is visible anywhere, though there are probably half a hundred within rifle-shot.
