DAY 1: THURSDAY, AUGUST 18th (Continued)

We returned to Bald Mountain House just in time to wash up for supper. Met Port Merriman and through him a number of fellow guests of his at the hotel. Port introduced us to Barrett who is a most jolly sort. The hotel is quite plain and unconventional, a fine run of guests, good table board, and first class accomodations. This is the kind of hotel I would prefer if I had to vacation it at hotels,- which I'm glad to say I don't.

Pulled out at seven o'clock, and met the Leggetts in the gasoline launch "Amyryllis" coming to meet us. We tumbled in, and, towing the boat, proceeded through Fourth Lake outlet and two miles up the western shore of Fourth Lake to "Ridgewood", their camp. The way they run that dinky launch is a caution. Louise steers with one hand, and sits with her face turned toward the stern, talking to you. Eddie runs the engine, by an occasional twist of the starting-crank to discourage any latent idea of a sudden stop that the engine may have. Fred confided privately to me that he was more scared while in the the launch than we was at any time in the canoe, or ever expected to be.
