Things to know when designing business cards Size The standard size for business cards is 3.5" wide by 2" deep. You can design them to any size and shape you want, but keep in mind that they may not fit standard business card holders and wallets. Colour Using black or spot colours for type is always preferable to a process colour (CMYK), because the type will be crisp with no dots. Dutone images can often be reasonably good substitutes for 4-colour images (remember to change the curves for each plate in Photoshop to get the most out of tonal values and contrast). Using duotones will help cut costs. Cost Designing with fewer colours will obviously be cheaper. It also depends on which printer you choose to use: Most printers will offer discounts on large orders of cards. Also, using non-standard sizes and shapes may cost more, especially if a dieline needs to be created. Trimming Be carefull not to have your artwork too close to the edges. Depending on the quality of the printer you choose, all your cards may not be trimed accurately, and you may have your artwork or type cut off.
