Are there guidelines for embossing and foil-stamping?

There aren't that many resources on the Web for preparing files for embossing. However, a good place to start would be the Foil Stamping and Embossing Association. There are also numerous books available on the subject, but not having read any of them, I can't recommend any.
Other than that, the only thing I can recommend is to get detailed instructions from whomever is going to be doing the embossing for you... some printers/manufacturers have slightly different requirements. It's always important to communicate with them from the beginning.
