How to set typographic quotation marks

Type option-[ (opening square bracket key above the return key) for opening "double" quotes, and option-shift-[ for closing double quotes.

Type option-] (closing square bracket key) for opening 'single' quotes, and option-shift-] for closing single quotes.

If you want to set an inch mark instead, use control-shift-' (quote key next to the return key), and for a foot mark use control-'.

The key commands are probably different for Windows users.

Mac users can use the "Key Caps" application (in your Apple menu) to find other special characters.

The keyboard preview in Key Caps can be somewhat small, especially if you have your screen set to a large resolution. If you've ever bought fonts from the FontShop, you may have received a free brochure (see below) that lists the special characters. If you don't have this handy reference sheet, you can ask for one to be mailed to you at the FontShop Website.
