What the box says:

Unsurpassed action-packed set pieces, dazzling direction and one of Chow Yun-Fat's most explosive performances fuel FULL CONTACT, a first-rate, high-octane tale of revenge and retribution.

To help his buddy Sam settle a gambling debt, Jeff (Chow Yun-Fat, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) relunctantly agrees to join forces with Judge (Simon Yan) for a daring weapons heist. But Sam and Judge betray Jeff and leave him for dead. Once nursed back to health, Jeff plots the ultimate payback.

Plot:

The movie starts off with a bunch of monks in Bangkok, Thailand. Snake skin jacket guy, Judge, is our first victim of retrogressive namification. He is looking around a shop, as a car pulls up outside. Short skirt chick, named Virgin obviously doesn’t live up to her name. She pulls a gun on the store’s security guard. Mohawk guy gets out of the car and keeps an eye for cops, etc…

Virgin and the guard go inside the shop. Judge demands the gold Buddhas. He stabs the store clerk when she denies knowing what’s he’s talking about. Mohawk Guy watches from outside.

Judge has the clerk open the safe, while Virgin watches the store patrons. Cops walk up to Mohawk and want him to move the car. He pulls out his machine gun and perforates them. Judge gets the Buddhas. They hop in the car and drive away.

We get to the opening credits, in a club sort of like Flashdance. Jeff, Chow Yun-Fat, walks past the dancer girl, the ever hot Mona. A deep philosophical question is asked by Extreme that had too many prom themes based on their song "More Than Words." If you don't like the seeing the dancing of Mona, "get the funk out." Jeff and his sidekick Chung go to the bathroom; they kick out a couple who are attempting to perform the beast with 2 backs. Jeff forces them to leave the club. In case you didn’t realize it, Jeff is bouncer at this club.

Hung, the loan shark calls Jeff demanding his money. Jeff’s friend Sam’s head is caught in a car window when Jeff arrives. Sam owes loan shark a lot of money. Jeff promises to pay it. Sam is smacked around some, and they threaten to cut one of his hands off. Angry Chow ensues. He manages to beat several of Hung’s goons. He is fighting 2 guys with swords using only a butterfly knife. The fight is over quick as Jeff demonstrates you don’t provoke Chow Yun-Fat when he is called Jeff.

My Gun Fu is stronger than yours...

Hung draws a gun but loses it to Jeff. Jeff smacks the loan shark around and frees Sam. Hung threatens to kill Sam if he doesn’t leave the country soon.

Chung gets a call at the club. He takes the uber-hot Mona with him. Jeff is in big trouble for the fight with Hung. Hung has lost face because of the fight will want revenge. At the apartment, they decide what to do. Sam has the brilliant idea to rob a bank. Jeff thinks it’s a bad idea.

Later, it is decided what money they have will get Mona to Hong Kong where she is to take Jeff’s mother’s ashes. Jeff will stay to help Sam, can’t leave Sam and Chung behind. Mona wants to stay with him. Mona reveals Sam borrowed the money from Hung for Jeff’s mother’s funeral.

Jeff talks with Sam and Chung. Sam has a cousin that might cut them in on a deal.

The next day, they go to the meet. Virgin and Mohawk are getting it on while Judge and fey boy watch. Jeff isn’t impressed with Judge’s group. I should mention that Judge is a bit flamboyant, as Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four might say “Flame on!” Chung and Mohawk get into a fight almost immediately. Chung is going to hit Mohawk with a chair. However, Judge shoots the chair out of his hands.

Mohawk grabs a chair and charges Chung. Jeff shoots the chair out of his hands. This impresses Judge.

Hung pays off Judge’s boy to kill Jeff.

At the airport, Jeff and Mona say goodbye before she heads to Hong Kong.

Judge has the heist planned out. Jeff and Virgin will block the traffic on the bridge. Jeff wants Chung with him. But, that idea is shot down. Virgin is cackling like a madwoman over Jeff. Actually, a better name for Virgin would be Skankalotta.

The truck heads down the route. Sam and Judge are following it. Mohawk and Chung are on the bridge. Virgin is hitting on Jeff, who is thoroughly disgusted with her. The ammo truck passes by. Mohawk and Chung get into another fight. Jeff is in front of the truck while Virgin is worming her own way into her inner circle, if you know what I mean. Jeff blocks the truck. Virgin uses a grenade to blow up the lead car. Mohawk and Chung take care of the truck guards. Judge takes care of the trailing car.

Mohawk drives the truck off. Jeff and Chung follow after it. Judge shoots Chung. Some of Hung’s men are after Jeff, too. Sam is pretty confused by this. Jeff is chasing after Judge, vowing to hunt him down.

The car chase continues. We get a sweet high speed car chase with gunfight thrown in, too. Mohawk is trying to run over Jeff’s car. Jeff’s car flips and crashes. Judge gets out of his car searching for Jeff. Jeff unloads some kung fu vengeance upon Judge who is obviously outclassed.

I'm a dirty pretty boy...
Judge uses a knife to stab Jeff and cut a couple of his fingers off, too. Sam is watching all of this stunned when he realizes that Chung is dead.

Judge versus the wounded Jeff until the family whose property they are fighting on wants them to leave. Mohawk’s truck approaches. They mow down the father. Jeff rushes inside the house.

It’s now Mohawk, Judge, Virgin, and Sam versus Jeff. Judge orders Sam to kill Jeff or else. Sam heads in the house. Jeff accuses him of betraying him. Sam has to kill Jeff. Jeff wants the gun; they can fight their way out. Sam shoots him but not fatally.

Judge’s crew outside hear the shots. Sam leaves. Judge shoots at the natural gas tank for the house to start a fire. Most of the family is killed in the fire. Jeff manages to escape with the daughter who is horribly scarred.

Judge’s crew drives away before the police arrive. They don’t see Jeff and the girl get to a boat and escape before the house explodes.

Mona is distraught over hearing about the robbery. She thinks Jeff burnt to death. At a temple, she mourns him.

We get the healing and sleazy guy moving on the hot chick montage scene. Jeff is being tended by a monk. Sam is putting the moves on Mona. The scarred girl is with Jeff, now.

Here comes the training montage. Imagine the Rocky 4 training sequence without Russia and with more guns. Jeff starts trying to shoot left-handed, no good. He starts working out to regain his strength.

Me and you and dog named Boo...
He keeps having flashbacks to the burning house. Sam is slowly getting his clutches into Mona. Jeff visits the scarred girl. After a long time, Jeff can shoot left-handed.

In a car, Judge is enjoying a hotdog. Get your mind out of the gutters.

My what a tasty schweaty weinah...
In the nearby bar, a guy is trying to sell guns cheaper than Judge to Hung. Virgin and Mohawk enter the bar. Sam arrives too and he is officially evil. He shoots an old friend. Hung leaves. Judge’s crew will take the gun dealer to meet Judge. Mohawk tosses him around. They shoot the bar up. Virgin uses her parting gift by throwing a grenade in the bar as they drive away.

Mona is in a pool. Jeff is in the background put has learned the vanishing trick. Sam arrives to pick Mona up. Jeff is watching from a distance. The lights cut out. Sam finds one of his friends dead. Jeff disarms Sam. Mona hears gunshots and finds Sam with his head in the pool. He tells her that Jeff is alive. Mona looks scared.

At Mona’s new dance club, that girl can shake a tail feather. Sam is starting to see her dance with Jeff. He gets a phone call to meet Jeff.

Sam meets with the motorcycle-riding angry Jeff. Sam will let Jeff kill him if only he’ll stop haunting him. Jeff doesn’t want Sam dead, demands money. Jeff rides away.

Mona is asking Sam about Jeff. Sam is angry that Mona is still in love with him. And, the fact she isn’t that concerned about him. Of course, Sam has neglected how he tried to kill Jeff and left him to die in a burning building. Mona thinks he’s keeping something from her.

On a rainy night, Jeff is thinking about Mona. A tender montage with touching song ensues. Jeff shoots Sam in the pool and awakens from the nightmare. Jeff checks on his dog.

In a cemetery, Sam meets with Jeff. Jeff wants Judge’s weapons cache. Sam won’t betray Judge. Jeff considers this progress from Sam betraying him.

Jeff questions Hung. He had a deal with Judge to kill Sam, Jeff, and Chung. Jeff taunts Sam that Chung died while he was protected by his cousin. Sam unloads a clip into Hung. Sam reveals he doesn’t know where the weapons are located. Jeff will go after Virgin. Sam tells Jeff Mona wants to see him. Jeff has a job to finish first.

At the club, Mona is dancing with Sam. Mohawk and Virgin watch from a distance. In the vernacular of the Scorpions, she isn’t being “Rocked like a Hurricane” enough by Mohawk. He goes off after hitting on a waitress. Mona wants to leave. Somehow, Jeff passes by her unnoticed. Sam gets Virgin out of the club. Mona finds Jeff who runs off. She chases after him. Jeff doesn’t want to see her even though he seems to be a good job of stalking her. Mona wants to know why he never let her know he was alive.

Sam is driving Virgin, well not that way like she’d want him to. She’s trying to not live up to her name as a train passes by not the Fellini kind, though. Sam starts pumping her for information. Well, not the only kind of pumping that’s going on, there. He manages to get the whereabouts of the weapons cache.

At an icehouse, Sam and Jeff meet. Sam knows where the guns are. Jeff reveals he doesn’t want to be in the picture with Mona. After, the score, he’s gone. Jeff takes care of the guards, Chow Yun-Fat Kung Fu style. He really wants the guns. Jeff isn’t worried when the guards pull out knives. It gives him a chance to unsheathe his butterfly knife again. Finally learns the guns are on nearby boat.

A large number of goons arrive and a gunfight ensues. Jeff shoots with authority and at fire extinguishers. Jeff and Sam manage to get to the boat. Jeff finds the weapons and the take off with the boat. They are chummy again.

At the club, Judge is very angry about the stolen guns. Jeff arrives and Judge and his crew finally learn he is alive. Mohawk wants to kill Jeff. He demands 10 million for the guns and then leaves. On his way out, he mentions to Mohawk that Sam has biblical knowledge of Virgin. They argue as Jeff leaves Chow Yun Fat cool. Judge wants to see Sam.

Jeff calls Sam to warn him that Judge knows. Sam isn’t too happy about being revealed to Judge. Sam starts to pack hastily.

We get another Mona dance. Sam drives to the club to get her. Judge and his crew are waiting for Sam to arrive at the club. Judge knows that Virgin told Sam where the guns were. Jeff arrives at the club, too. Mona is onstage unaware of what is going on in the club. Sam manages to get the drop on Mohawk

Jeff and Judge are having a stare-down. In Jeff’s case, it wants the guy dead. Judge’s case involves peach preserves and a live chicken. Sam yells at Mona to make a run for it. Mohawk manages to break free of Sam and starts beating him. The rest of Judge’s crew wails upon Sam.

Virgin grabs Mona. Sam is taking the fight to the crew. Jeff is watching this happily as is Judge. Mohawk has a broken bottle to readily decorate Sam with until Jeff intervenes. Sam rushes to Jeff but is shot in the leg by Judge.

Jeff versus Judge, the original bullet time effect visits us. Everybody gets down. Bullets are flying about as the camera assumes the point of view of the bullet. Bullets are hitting each other in midair. Or even, better, a bullet going through a guy’s eye.

Jeff covers Mona who escaped the clutches of Virgin. Jeff uses Virgin as a hostage. If he is killed, Judge won’t get his guns back. Judge has to let him go, this time. Jeff has Mona and Sam go first before he goes, too.

Judge has a talk with Virgin. She betrayed him. Judge busts a cap in her skanky self.

In a car, Jeff, Mona and Same are driving away. Sam is complaining that Jeff set him up. Mona learns that Sam shot and left Jeff for dead. Jeff blames Sam for what happened to the family and the scarred girl in Thailand.

Judge explains to Mohawk why Virgin had to die. Mohawk is depressed by losing her. Apparently, Sam and Jeff are to blame for Virgin being killed. Never mind the flamboyant guy who capped her.

Jeff tends to Sam’s gunshots. Mona has decided to dump Sam. She’s going to leave. Sam is worried she’ll be killed. Jeff goes after her. They have a poignant scene. It’s a good thing when we get poignancy in a sweet Hong Kong action movie. Jeff can’t marry her now. Mona is angry that Jeff was jealous of her living with Sam. They kiss one last time and she leaves. No more moneymaker tail shaking left.

Judge gets a call from Jeff to set up the meet. Sam knows it is a trap. We learn that Jeff is getting the money for the scarred girl. This makes Sam want to atone for what he did. Sam wants to help but can’t go. Jeff leaves for the meet.

Jeff waits for Judge to arrive. Mohawk has the money for Jeff. Judge isn’t there. Jeff refuses to deal. Mohawk grabs an M-16. Jeff starts lobbing grenades at the cars of Judge’s crew. Riding on his motorcycle, he guns down the crew. He even runs over Mohawk, too. Jeff grabs the briefcase with the cash.

Judge is sneaking up on Jeff. Judge shoots the gun out of Jeff’s left hand. Demanding the weapons, Jeff uses a remote detonator to explode a series of cars. While Judge is distracted, Jeff grabs his gun and shoots at him right-handed. But, with his unsteady hand, he misses. Judge shoots him in the chest. Judge regrets not having him in an Ellen-Anne Heche way. Jeff regrets not killing him.

Jeff readies his knife which Judge shoots in his hand. Jeff throws it, cutting Judge’s wrist. Jeff shoots Judge. Though extremely weak, he plants a bullet through the base of Judge’s throat. Jeff collapses to the ground. We get a flashback to better times. In the rainstorm, we see the briefcase grabbed by Jeff as he stumbles to his bike and rides away.

What I say:

Imagine a movie that just oozes manliness. Imagine a movie with Hugh Jackman and Vin Diesel starring in Damn Manly. Well, imagine a movie that is more manly than that. A movie concerning revenge, bikers, sweetest bullet time effects that have came out in years, sluts named Virgin, and what do you get? Well, throw in Chow Yun-Fat. And you get Full Contact.

I haven’t seen any of the director Ringo Lam’s movies before this. But, that might need to be remedied. Sort of leery after learning one of Ringo's last movies starred Jean-Claude Van-Damme. That my friends is a warn signing if I ever heard of one. John Woo is a lot more wide known in America, with his artistic action scenes and noble cops and mobsters. But, Ringo Lam doesn’t stage the ballet-style action pieces. His action is more on the gritty side and more believable at least somewhat more realistic. Ringo’s characters seem more human than Woo’s, too.

Some movies are hard to list as B-movies. In fact, some of what would automatically be considered B is becoming too main-stream, like Hong Kong movies as a general example. As a rule, John Woo would be off limits to me. I've done a Jet Li movie Deadly China Hero. But, him dressing as a chicken to fight a fire breathing centipede is definite B-movie material.

But, what about Chow Yun-Fat? In Hong Kong, he is more of widely accepted in different types of roles than here. We’ve only seen him as this international action star and being in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The first Chow Yun-Fat movie I saw was on Scinemax many years ago: Hard Boiled. That's a move that blows away almost every action movie I can think of off the top of my head. But, they also showed Dead Alive there. So, they actually would show quality entertainment besides Scinemax After Dark.

It's hard to think of anyone in this movie as a hero. In fact, Mona is the only not psychopathic or sociopathic character in the movie. Jeff is involved in an arms robbery in the middle of the city. Yes, he's trying to help his friends get out of a mess he created inadvertently. But, how hard is it to get out of Bangkok? A point about Bangkok from Murray Head "One night in Bangkok makes a hard man crumble..." Sorry bad 80s pop moment. The club Mona works at seems awfully tame for Bangkok's reputation.

Ann Bridgewater, that girl can shake a tail feather better than Francine Yip did in Rumble in the Bronx. She had a cage and a tiger. Ann doesn’t need any wild animals for an audience. Normally, the love interest in this kind of movie is just so annoying you can't stand them. It's quite a compliment to find an actress who can come across as likable. If you thought that Chow Yun-Fat had died, would you move in on her? You know you'd do the same thing Sam did.

Simon Yan is Judge. We get very few psychopathic gay villains in American movies. But, this guy would be as sociopathic even if he were straight granted he'd hit on Chow Yun-Fat less, though. Mohawk comes across as a pretty dumb lug for the most part. Kind of felt sorry for him after Virgin got capped. The slutkateer and skankaliscious Virgin, how hard is it to make a miniskirt clad, nymphomaniac seem annoying? It isn’t hard in her case, with her laugh.

The subtitles and the dubbed versions had a few differences. The subtitles identify Chow Yun-Fat as Godfrey while the dubbed version calls him Jeff. The dubbed version claims that Jeff and Mona were married. But, the subtitles refer to them at most as engaged. It makes more sense that Jeff and Mona are engaged. That makes more sense Sam picked her up on the rebound than if Mona had marrried Jeff.

One of the other terms to describe this movie than bad-ass would have to be grim and gritty. Can you picture a girl being hideously scarred and not being able to have plastic surgery? How about the main character losing a couple of fingers and having to learn to shoot without them? It is a bit surprising that Jeff goes to so much trouble to get the money for the girl. Granted, getting the money wasn’t much more difficult than his plan for revenge against Sam and Judge.

The gunfights are hard to explain without reducing me to just gushing about how great they are. The bullet time effect had to have just been developed when this movie was made. It is vaguely reminiescient of the Sam Raimi POV monster cam. I had intended to post a image of the effect but, I couldn't get a decent enough screen grab to post. The past few years, we haven’t had any really decent action movies released. Steven Segal has somehow escaped direct to video and can now once unleash upon the world theatrical movies.

With as violent as Full Contact is, it has been toned down. Judge had mentioned how much he liked Jeff’s eyes. When Sam was sent into the house to kill Jeff, he was to bring Jeff’s eyes for proof the deed was done. Sam cut the eyes out of one of the dead people in the house and brought them out. Whether the following part was even filmed I don't know for sure. Where Judge popped it in his mouth and ate it. You can see in the DVD version at least Sam has something bloody in his hands when he leaves the house.

A movie that doesn’t have the Hollywood required happing ending is a change, too. Mona leaves Sam and doesn’t want to get back with Jeff. Though, Sam, realizes and wants to make up for what he has done, in the end, he doesn’t ride to the rescue much like Ratnose trying to save Sonny Chiba in StreetFighter.

This isn’t a happy movie by any stretch of the imagination. The entire revenge plan from Chow Yun Fat seems so much like an old gangster movie plan. First use Sam who betrayed me to get my revenge. Then, let Judge learn that Sam was used against him. It just have a film nourish quality about it. In fact, this is a remake of a John "Zardoz, Exorcist 2: Heretic" Boorman movie from 1967: Point Blank starring Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson. Haven’t seen that movie, but I can only see Chow Yun-Fat taking Lee Marvin’s role. And that screams to me Damn Manly.
