about: beefheart, residents, zappa & lotsa (m)others
hmmm, updates:
* kladderadatsch: wilde kamelen
(1994, cd, nl, klad 1094)
true, more and more musicians are playing (and recording!) frank zappa's
music. The ensemble kladderadatch is from nijmegen, holland, and they
became a part of this list as well. On "wilde kamelen", their first cd, they
play an excellent version of 'cletus awreetus awrightus' (frank zappa).
Actually, the entire album is quite impressive. The other compositions
don't ring too many bells with me, but most of them sound like they were
assembled from all over the world.
As it was released in 1994 (1000 numbered copies), only a handful are left.
* * * chester thompson (of zappa- and genesis-fame) has an instructional
video out in the "starlicks master sessions" series. * * *
"cucamonga" is a photo-book by rudy vanderlans, published by emigre (usa)
somewhere last year. Chapters include "lancaster","laurel
canyon","tarzana", "glendale" and "cucamonga". Somehow, this book does not
really present what I thought it would. It feels like just a bundle of
pictures.
The included cd is something else:
1. lancaster (a field recording)
2. gary lucas: hurly burly comin' down (gary lucas)
3. john french: vienna sausage waltz (john french
4. zoot horn rollo: don's secret (zoot horn rollo)
5. woodland hills (a field recording)
only 17 minutes, but it's always good to hear some magic music. And the
zoot horn rollo piece makes me wondering what he has been up to lately... I
hope it will result in a zoot horn rollo album.
"necessity is... the early years of frank zappa & the mothers of invention"
by billy james, published by saf publishing (uk) a couple of months ago.
in the early ninetees billy james, also known as the ant-bee, not only
invited a couple of mothers to participate in his musical projects, he also
did some excellent interviews with them. Parts of these interviews got
released on his electrik yak tape-label: interviews with jc black (two
parts), bunk gardner, don preston and motorhead sherwood. Excellent stuff.
And now, there's the book. All compiled from interviews with the early
mothers, the ant-bee presents a fabulous book: the mothers talking about the
early days. It's not just a fact book; it's a book that tells the story of
what it was like. If you're a bit interested in the mother's muzik & their
bizarre adventures, this is essential reading!
About two years ago, ryko japan released six zappa samplers. Each samplers
was compiled by a japanese artist, presenting his favorite selection.

there's not so much to tell about these samplers. They don't really
add something new to your collection. They just look good :-)
"somewhere over the rainbow - the art of neon park" is an art-book,
published by last gasp (a u.s. comic book publisher) about the late neon
park. It has the famous mothers' weasels cover on the front and includes
lots of little feat covers as well. It's a beautiful book and it's probably
available through every comic book shop or the last gasp web-site.
that's all for now, talk again to you soon,
peter larvenhoven (in the ant-bee's words)
