Horizontal engine | A steam engine in which
the cylinders are mounted horizontally on stone beds.The power was applied
direct to a crankshaft and no beam was required. In the later part of the
19th Century this became the most common winding engine being installed
and it used steam at a higher pressure than the Cornish engine.
Without the need for a strong bob wall the building housing Horizontal engines were far less massive than those of beam engines |

Headgear

Head frame |
The steel or wooden frame over the shaft to carry pulleys or sheave wheels for hoisting. Wires from the whim engine passed over this wheels and the gear normally stood adjacent to a pump engine. Lighter temporary headgear was sometimes installed during the sinking of a new shaft. | |
Horse whim | A winding device using power supplied by a horse walking around a circular platform and applied to an overhead winding drum.Horse whims were often used for winding from small shafts on Cornish mines especially during shaft sinking. |
