on a tramway or railway to ascend a steep rise . The incline plane
consists of a slope (often in a cutting or on an embankment) laid with

Indoor stoke | The stroke of a beam engine
when the indoor end of the bob
descends. The piston is forced down on the indoor stroke by steam pressure
and the pump rods in a shaft are pulled up by the other end of the bob
(beam).
The steam valve is closed at about one third of the indoor stroke allowing the expansion of steam to produce the rest of the power. |
