The Anglican clergyman, Rev. George Langhorne was appointed to set up Victoria’s first Mission Station, an 895 acre Aboriginal reserve, part of which remains as the 36 acres of today’s Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. The site was chosen in part because it had been a traditional camping site and because of its richness in flora and fauna. Although this was one of the first conscious positive steps taken in Victoria towards the Aboriginal people it was made with little or no understanding of the Aboriginal culture and had limited Government support. Despite all the best intentions of George Langhorne, in March 1839 the Mission was abandoned. It had only lasted one year.
