Source - Port Phillip Herald 1 Oct 1844 John Quigley's life story, christened 19 Nov 1819 in Kilmanagh, County Kilkenny, Ireland, died 31 Mar 1898 in Redruth, Hamilton, Victoria, Australia. Maria Agnes was christened on August 19th, 1844 and Joseph Thomas on October 4th, 1845. They were both christened in Saint Francis's Church, Melbourne. Michael was christened on November 10th, 1846, and John in May, 1848. Their places of birth of are not known, but they were baptised at Mount Napier in the Portland district on May 23, 1848, the same day that John Quigley wed Winifred Mary Tracey b: ABT 1823 in Keil, Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland. John and Winifred lost a child in December 12, 1850, when their four year old son Michael (1) died after being kicked by a horse near their home on Brisbane Station near Hamilton. The record of this tragedy can be found in the inquest papers held at the Public Record Office. The inquest was presided over by Dugald Bannatyne Craig who later became the second husband of Winifred's cousin, Cecilia Dolphin. There is no record of where Michael was buried. The inquest papers make it clear that John was employed on the property as a shepherd, and it is probable that the child was buried there. In 1850, Annie Theresa was born, but there is no record of her baptism. | ||||||
