Matthew Sedgwick and Elizabeth (Hawkeswell) Sedgwick immigrated to Australia in 1843. They sailed aboard the ship "Dale Park" from Liverpool to Port Phillip District (now Melbourne). They were assisted migrants and indentured to William Roadknight to work on his sheep property at Geelong (50 miles south-west of Melbourne) for a year at 15 pounds sterling cash plus rations. After this they returned to Melbourne, where he got a job with a beer brewer.
Matthew and Elizabeth both died young, leaving five orphans. Matthew's brother Thomas Sedgwick (1797 - 1884) raised these children, his nieces and nephews, along with his own.
