Studio Ghibli
Studio Ghibli is established by the world-famous Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki. Ghibli means "hot wind blowing through the Sahara Desert". It is an Italian word used for WWII scouting airplanes. The studio was named that due to Miyazaki's passion for planes.
Studio Ghibli was first established in 1985 by Tokuma Publishing Company and Miyazaki. Laputa: The Castle in the Sky is the first anime film produced in the studio.
Acclaimed films produced by Studio Ghibli and directed by Hayao Miyazaki include Tenkuu no Shiro Rapyuta (Laputa: Castle in the Sky, 1986), Majo no Takkyuubin (Kiki's Delivery Service, 1989), Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro, 1988), Kurenai no Buta (Porco Rosso, 1992), Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke, 1997), and Sen To Chihiro Kamikakushi (Spirited Away, 2001), which won an Academy Award for best animated feature, and Hauru no Ugoku Shiro (Howl's Moving Castle, 2005)
Other films produced by Studio Ghibli but were not directed by Miyazaki include Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies, 1988), Mimi wo Sumaseba [literally means If you listen closely] (Whisper of the Heart, 1995), and Neko no Ongaeshi (The Cat Returns, 2002), which also happens to be the sequel to the Whisper of the Heart.
