Here are some basic techniques to perform:
Drawing energy
  Look for the four fold breath on
this page. You can also take energy from anything that has energy.  For example, you can take energy from the sun, the moon, or my personal favorites: the earth and the air.  For light, visualize it coming into your body when it hits you and giving you more energy.  For using things like the earth and air, picture the energy from them coming into your body and going into your dan tien.
Surging:
  This is creating a surge of energy and pushing it into your dan tien.  When you breathe in, picture the air as energy coming into your nose and staying there.  Then when you breathe out, visualize the energy surging down either into your dan tien.  It's like the four fold breath, but it's used for storing energy, as where the four fold breath is used for circulationg energy.  You just store what's left over.  You can also send the energy into a part of your body, like maybe your hand if you were doing telekinesis or making a psiball. It really works. 
Ki flame:
    The purpose of this technique is to evenly distribute energy throughout your body in greater than normal concentrations.  You must release your energy and pulse it in and out of your body in order to evenly distribute it.  picture the energy in your body and in your dan tien moving about your body.  VIsualize it leaving your body and surrounding you like a flame, then coming back in and pulsing out again.  This will greatly increase your speed, strenth, vitality, etc. if done properly.

GAINING ENERGY:
Ki shield: This little classic is a simple way to defend against ki attacks.  2 methods: 1: make a giant empty ki ball and step inside.
2: focus on making a big ball of energy around your body.   In either method remember to keep the shield up
