From: Nancy Guevarra Narciso Date: Wed Oct 16, 2002 1:38 pm Subject:Re:Condoling w/Flowers 2 Dear SJO, Carolle has corrected me. She said the flowers at Dangwa don't all come from Baguio. They are from all over, Asia, Europe etc. That street is a veritable flower strip. And yes, always bring Carolle to Dangwa as no one can beat her in haggling. I guess the vendors just give in to her rather than see the flowers wilt before they can agree on the right price. Tonight is the last night of "lamay" for Elvie's Mom. Her interment at Manila Memorial Park is scheduled tomorrow, Thursday, after the 2 pm Mass. I heard from Lahla that she and Sr. Nieves are arranging to have some St. Paul sisters sing at the Mass. Wouldn't that be a taste of heaven? And provide such comfort to Elvie and the rest of the family? Elvie's Mom, Alice Johnson Reyes, is wearing a lovely blue lavender gown. While viewing her, Marilen couldn't help but whisper to me, "ang ganda ng gown niya." Mommy Reyes is beautiful even in death. (We know why all her daughters are so goodlooking.) On top of the coffin is a large, black and white photo of her taken when she was much younger that shows her in traditonal Filipina dress, like the carnival queens of yesteryears. Really glamorous! Nancy
From: Nancy Guevarra Narciso Date: Tue Oct 15, 2002 1:01 am Subject: Condoling with Flowers I got a text message from Nina Batto Ganal at 11 pm tonight that said she was at at Magallanes where Elvie's Mom lies in state. She was with Lahla, Lahla's sister, Nydia, Maria, Corrie, Lena and Bob. She said they were soon proceeding to Don Bosco to at the wake for Cocoi's brother, Alfonso. mercifully, the two wakes are both in Makati and the PIGGs can move from one place to the next and back to meet up with other GGs. Earlier at lunch, Millie texted me that she had gone to Don Bosco with Lahla. Well, tonight, both Carolle and I are unexpectedly no-shows. We two got home close to 3 am, after leaving Don Bosco at past midnight yesterday. We went there to be with Cocoi on the first night. We were just an handful, Carolle, maria, Corrie and Me with only the immediate family and a few close friends. All night, Susan DJ was texting us and we felt that she really was with us in spirit. From Don Bosco, CArolle and I accompanied Cocoi's two older brothers, Jim and Manny, to the Dangwa bus station where all the beautiful frsh flowers from Baguio arrive at past midnight daily. We spent more than two hours, going around, choosing from anthuriums, mums, orchids, lilliums, roses, birds of paradise, etc. so many lovely blooms in all shades,(some of which I didn't know the names for) before deciding on what standing arrangements/topiaries to order. All the time, I was half- expecting Audrey Hepburn to appear and sing like she did in "My Fair Lady". Cocoi and her siblings wanted to buy two for their family. We, meaning we convinced the brothers to decide on one lush, elegant arrangement of white orchids on driftwood and another topiary-type that combined white and the palest peach anthuriums. The brothers were also asked to buy one more arrangement for Cocoi's friend, Josie ( Remember her? She was in the photo with Cocoi when they visited Mildred in San Diego). Cocoi's brothers chose (i.e. we let them have their way) for the third arrangement, an exotic assortment of vivid tropical flowers, birds of paradise and lobsters' claws.( It was a strong, masculine choice that was truly striking and we loved it. Kulang lang some dancing island girls to complete the picture.) Carolle and I picked a fourth, a standing topiary of white, pale pink and lilac mums for the SPCM_HS 65 GGs.It took us a long time to choose and longer yet for Carolle to do the haggling. Si Carolle pala ang masarap kasama sa tawaran. We also wanted to get another for Elvie's Mom but we we couldn't very well ask the brothers to wait and bring the fifth arrangement for Elvie's Mom to Don Bosco. Jim and Manny had to hire a jeepney for the flowers as it was impossible to load them in their car.Carolle and I made a date to go back tonight and buy another arrangement for Elvie's Mom. Well, as faith would have it, Carolle's hubby is feeling worse and needs Carolle's TLC (he was already sick last night!) and I am bone tired from one long afternoon with the dentist's drill followed by a quick visit to my mother. From QC to Ortigas to Manila and back to QC. I went to bring my mother the beautiful, multi-colored colored Malaysian mums that I had bought last night (A big bunch for only P60.00! Siyempre tinawaran ni Carolle) A kind of "buy your Mother flowers while she is can still enjoy them" sort of impulse. Remember, as Agnes poem's puts it, "The Time is Now." Nancy
From: Nancy Guevarra Narciso Date: Tue Oct 15, 2002 2:20 pm Subject: The parlor hopping GGs Dear Beth, Thanks also for your etext this am.I immediately forwarded it to Cocoi. Kayo ni SJO are so sweet to be with us during this confusing time through etexting. Hindi na kami masyadong tuliro ngayon. Medyo, things have calmed down. And we have all regained our sense of humor. All night last night, the GGs including sweet Maria were texting me that they, as well as the SPC nuns, were parlor hopping. Bagong golden gimmick daw. And nang-iingit pa because Carolle and I were not with them. I am glad that we are already able to laugh at ourselves. I texted back and said, huwag sana maging madalas ang golden gimmick na yan, if you know what I mean. I also texted na kung beauty parlors yan, over-coiffed and over made-up na kayo by now. Sabi nga ni Lahla when she called me after lunch today, me kodakan pa sila. I told her para naman kayong mga taga barrio. She said hindi naman sa tabi nung dearly departed. Nancy
From: Nancy Guevarra Narciso Date: Thu Oct 17, 2002 1:07 am Subject: Magallanes Picture Tonight, Wednesday, October 16,2002 was the last night of the wake for Elvie's mother, Mrs. Alice Johnson-Reyes. Carolle called to say that it is confirmed: the St. Paul nuns will sing at the requiem Mass at 2 pm tomorrow. I was planning to stay home and rest tonight but was back parlor-hopping to accompany fellow QC resident, Socorro "Oro" Ramoso. At Magallanes, we caught up with the group of Millie, Mela, Lahla and her sis,Jeepers, and balikbayans, Lena and husband Bob. Lena told us they are scheduled to fly back tomorrow. With the flowers as our backdrop, there is no denying we were at a funeral parlor. But our batch wasn't the only one posing for pics. The classmates of Elvie's sisters were doing the very same thing. Parang naging joke nga among the GGs that you can go straight after office to Magallanes and have your dinner there. Here's another photo with Fr. Bob, this time without Mela but with Elvie's sis, Cecile,HS 66. Nancy -

From: Nancy Guevarra Narciso Date: Thu Oct 17, 2002 1:15 am Subject: Father Bob Amidst the condoling and kodakan, there was still time for on the spot counselling with Fr. Bob. Lena's Bob who came to pick up Lena was convinced to share some tips for effective inter-personal relationships. Nancy
From: Nancy Guevarra Narciso Date: Wed Oct 16, 2002 1:50 am Subject: Taken at Don Bosco with Cocoi This photo was taken at Don Bosco tonight. See if you can identify the longlost, elusive three Ls who made Cocoi very happy with their surprise visit. Sister Nieves, our HS sophomore adviser and Sr. Anne, our former registrar joined us. Nancy
From: Nancy Guevarra Narciso Date: Fri Oct 18, 2002 10:05 pm Subject:W/Sr.Caritas at Don Bosco Today, October 18, 2002 is Sr. Caritas' 77th birthday. She was with us at Cocoi's last night and we didn't go home till after 12 midnight so we could all greet her a happy birthday. Corrie and Loy Dichoso wanted to bring Sr. Caritas to the Aristocrat Restaurant on Roxas Blvd for barbecue and Java rice but Sr. demurred, saying it was past her curfew. Instead, we had hot pancit molo at Don Bosco served by bereaved but sweetly smiling Cocoi. Sr. Caritas was recently given an addtional assignement by their new SPCQC superior, Sr. Jocelyn. Sr. Caritas has to ensure that all gates and doors are properly locked in the evening. We kid her that it is because she stays out late with us so often. Here is a photo taken after the Mass said by Fr. Rio Evangelista, the parish priest of United Paranaque. Cocoi serves in the parish as lector and Fr. Rio's confidante. Interestingly, Fr. Rio was chaplain of SPCM in 1979-80 and remembers many of the nuns and our teachers including Miss Esty Juco. Cocoi's brother, Alfonso will be cremated after the 11 am Mass, Saturday. In photo, seated(from left) Nina ,Sr. Caritas (the bday nun), Cocoi, me, and Mely Calma-Sol. Standing are Mrs. Andal(Cocoi's Mom)Tony Ganal, Loy Dichoso, Fr. Rio and Corrie. Nancy
From: Nancy Guevarra Narciso Date: Mon Oct 21, 2002 1:13 am Subject: Mass and dinner at Valle Verde Mass was said at 7;15 tonight for Elvie’s mom, Mrs. Alice Johnson Reyes at Valle Verde 1. After the Mass, a sumptuous buffet dinner was served at the village’s spacious hall located within the park. The food was very good. I am an incorrigible dessert lover which is why I’ll make special mention of the “dulces” we had. There was a moist and not- too- sweet carrot cake, a honey crunch cake with luscious strawberry topping, a chocolate cake made more decadent with chocolate mouse filling, brownies heavy with walnuts and fruit/cream gelatine rounds. We transferred to Susan Reyes- Grau‘s lovely home for coffee and, you won’t believe this, more dessert : pandan cupcakes! Maureen Noble and Susan Reyes joined us in this photo. Nancy
