Description: Our next stop was Antipolo. From QC, we proceeded to the St. Paul Novitiate in Antipolo where we were warmly welcomed by the nuns headed by Sr. Provincial, Sr. Magdalene. I asked her why she is called Sr. instead of Mother. She said it was her wish to be called Sister just like her predecessor, Sr. Agnes so the other nuns would not be intimidated and feel closer to her, you know, just like sisters. Nancy Guevarra Narciso
Place Taken: Function Room, St. Paul Antipolo Description: We were so touched to know that they had prepared a sumptuous lunch. Look at that table.Sinigang na bangus, inihaw na plapla ala pobre, chicken and pork adobo, halabos na sugpo, pancit, steamed vegetables, green mango salad, lots of fruits including durian from Bangkok, buko juice, ice cream and their own Sao Paolo mineral water .....The buco and most of the fruits came from their own trees. Since Sr. Magdalene became the provincial superior two years ago, they have planted 800 more new trees, mango, rambutan, chico, durian, pomelo etc. The climate in Antipolo is cool like Los Banos and Tagaytay and fruit trees thrive in the St. Paul orchard. Nancy Guevarra Narciso
Place Taken: Function Room, St. Paul Antipolo Description: After lunch, Sol and Lito Ilagan gave Sr. Magdalene a status report on the ongoing work being done to incorporate the Paulinian Global Foundation. ........The session with Sr. Magdalene, Sr. Nieves, Sr. George and Sr. Philip lasted for more than two hours. There was also an impromptu brainstorming on ways to raise funds for the Vigil House. Sr. Magdalene was profuse in her thanks to the Ilagan couple and to all the USGGS who rallied around to make the trip of Sr. Nieves and Sr. George truly memorable. By Nancy Guevarra Narciso
Our next stop was the SP Antipolo museum which has an exhibit that detail the almost 100-year history of the St. Paul de Chartres congregation in the Philippines. Nancy Guevarra Narciso
From: Nancy Guevarra Narciso Date: Sun Dec 29, 2002 2:52 am Subject: Habits Change Here we are posing at the museum with Sr. Magdalene, Sr. Nieves, Sr. Mary George and two mannequins wearing the former habits of SPC nuns. The one on the right was worn from 1803 to 1953. The one on the left was used from 1953 to 1966. We all witnessed the change after Vatican 2 as the Paulinian nun’s habit became shorter and the veil changed from the "flying nun" type to the simpler veil. We saw a bit of leg and some hair on the nun’s head. I remember telling myself then, "Ay hindi naman pala sila kalbo!" because there was this belief that nuns' heads were shaved when they enter the convent.
Description: Sr. Magdalene and Mike. Dios Mio is one of Mike’s oft-repeated exclamations because it is Sr. Magdalene’s favourite expression. Mike also says many different statements with different intonations. Examples: God bless you! Praise the Lord! Kumain ka na ba? Si Father late! Which makes you think that perhaps, the priests invited to say Mass are often late. There is a funny anecdote about a priest who taken aback when he heard Mike say,”Si Father late”. The priest stopped and addressed Mike in a very serious tone, “Hindi ako late. I’m on time.” From the novitiate we went to Antipolo Church.
