VISIT TO THE VIGIL HOUSE AND SP ANTIPOLO
. " This picture was taken at the courtyard of the Vigil House. The stronger but already retired nuns hovered around us and seemed genuinely pleased to see us. they served us puto, cuchinta, orange juice and coffee. Sr. Nieves organized this visit to the vigil house for the balikbayans Sol and Lito Ilagan, and Beth Pineda and for their classmates who wanted to come along. The other GGs who joined were Carolle Chan , Dottie Lucasan, Milagros Alveda, Angie Hernandez, Nora Ebro and Nancy Guevarra."

Nancy Guevarra
"This is the small clicnic of the present Vigil House. Even the sick nuns were so sweet and readily smiled for pics. The present VH has become small. It houses more than 70 retired nuns and there are almost just as many still residing different SPC convents all over the Philppines. There is no more room for them until the new VH is built in Pasig. Many of the sick nuns stay in ward type rooms with only a cloth curtain separating their beds to give them some privacy."
-Nancy Guevarra Narciso
"Sr. Miriam is seated at center beside Sr. Nieves and the other sisters who were so
kind to treat us for breakfast. Sr. Miriam who is past 80 is still active and is top
CEO of St. Paul University of Tuguegarao. She was substituting for Sr. Milagros
who is in charge of the daily spriritual readings and reflection of the nuns at the Vigil Hous. Sr. Milagros was away on home leave"

Lunch Visit to SP Antipolo
"After lunch, Sol and Lito Ilagan gave Sr. Magdalene a status report on the ongoing work being done to incorporate the Paulinian Global Foundation.
The session with Sr. Magdalene, Sr. Nieves, Sr. George and Sr. Philip lasted for more than two hours. There was also an impromptu brainstorming on ways to raise funds for the Vigil House. Sr. Magdalene was profuse in her thanks to the Ilagan couple and to all the USGGs who rallied around to make the trip of Sr. Nieves and Sr. George truly memorable."

From: "marisolbalda Date: Sat Dec 28, 2002 9:15 am Subject: Re: Visit to Antipolo Dear Classmates, Nancy, many thanks for posting the pictures of our visit to the Vigil House and Antipolo. Yesterday was indeed a memorable day for me, Lito and I'm sure also for the rest of the GGs who were fortunate enough to join Sr. Nieves who brought us to the Vigil House, the new SPCQC Auditorium and the Antipolo SPC Convent. The day started with Sr. Nieves meeting us all at the Dusit Hotel lobby. First to arrive were Dottie Lucasan and Beth Pineda, followed by Nora Ebro, Angie Hernandez, Mila Almeda and Carolle Chan. Nancy Guevarra and Sylvia Mesina went directly to the Vigil House. As Nancy mentioned, we were all teary-eyed upon seeing our dear sisters helpless and really wanting for attention. Sr. Josefa would not let go my hand and kept asking me to come back to visit her. I had a hard time fighting back tears as I remember how she was when she was our Dean of the Commerce Dept. I strongly suggest to all of the Paulinians to plan at least a half day to visit the Vigil House whenever they visit Manila. You will understand and see the reason why it really is important to work together and build the new Vigil House. The primary purpose of the visit to Antipolo, was to brief Sr. Magdalene, the SPC Provincial, on the progress of the Paulinian Global Foundation which is being formed in the US. I reported that the application for Incorporation has already been filed ................. We also discussed the follow up activities such as the creation of committees as well as selection of board members. Other topics we touched on are the dissemination of information via the website and other publications. Also included were the report on the successful visit to the USA of Sr. Mary George and Sr. Nieves. Sr. Magdalene gave us some guidance on how to proceed with our pending activities. Our tour ended at about 2 p.m. before proceeding to the Antipolo Church and stopping by Via Mare for merienda. We were back at the hotel at about 7 p.m. It was indeed a long but worthwhile day for us all. God bless,

That is Sr. Charles with Sylvia. One of these three 3 nuns will celebrate her golden anniversary as a St. Paul nun next year, the same year that Sr. Caritas will celebrate her 50th. When these nuns in wheelchairs were told that we would take their picture, even the nun on the right (with Nora) who looked almost ready to fall off her wheelchair ( in the previous photo that was taken without their knowledge ) straightened up. Graceful to the core. Paulinian to the end Nancy Guevarra Narciso
Sr. Josefa would not let go my hand and kept asking me to come back to visit her. I had a hard time fighting back tears as I remember how she was when she was our Dean of the Commerce Dept. Sol Balda Ilagan
Place Taken: Vigil House SPCQC Description: The old nuns in this are the few lucky ones. Although weak and frail, they can still manage to go out to the courtyard for sun and company and they looked on amusedly as we had breakfast. The nun with her back turned was on the phone, on a rather long call Sr. Josefa and Mother Socorro are not as lucky. They are now completely bedridden. Sr. Josefa’s mind is still sharp and she clung to Sol’s hand ,making her promise to come back and visit again. Mother Socorro is now senile. Date Taken: December 27,2002 Nancy Guevarra Narciso

From: "marisolbalda Date: Fri Feb 7, 2003 6:32 am Subject: Announcement Dear Paulinians (Maria, paki circulate naman widely - thanks) Last week, because of too many commitments (official and personal). Susan had to resign as Secretary of the Paulinian Global Foundation, Inc. She felt that if she could not give a substantial time for the Foundation, it would be best if someone else could take her place and she suggested Chona Dizon Freedman (HS'80). Chona also came to mind because of her awesome work on the Vigil House which is linked to their website, and she gladly accepted the position, which gave us officers a sigh of relief. I have informed Sr. Nieves of this change. Susan, we will still be coming to you for advice, okay? I will also be emailing all regional representatives here in the US for a teleconference which will take place during the week of the 24th February to give all an update on what has progressed so far with the Paulinian Global Foundation, Inc. Thanks and God bless, Sol
From: Sol Balda Ilagan Date: Fri Apr 11, 2003 9:35 pm Subject:Message fr Sr.Magdalen Hello everyone, Attached here is a message from Sr. Magdalen which I would like to share to all: 9 April 2003 “Rejoice in the Lord . . .!” Dear Paulinians, Let this greeting from our Patron, St. Paul, echo in your heart as it does in ours. Indeed, there is a cause for rejoicing. On March 31 at 9 o’clock a.m., the blessing and the laying of the cornerstone of the new Vigil House were celebrated in simple rites. It was a simple family affair attended by about 60 Sisters from around Metro-Manila. This was made possible because of your generosity and support of the project. The initial contributions you have made upon the setting of the Paulinian Global Foundation Inc. last November-December 2002 have helped a great deal in this particular event. You will find attached some pictures. We are confident that this project will find completion as scheduled. We have been receiving contributions from some of you and there are some pledges, too. We pray that the Provident God who began this work in and among you will continue to bless you. We would like to also take this opportunity to thank those of you who accepted to be members of the Board of the Foundation. We understand that some of you are kept from involving themselves directly in the Board because of your busy schedule. But we know that you will always be there in support of it. Very sincerely yours in Mary and St. Paul, (SGD) SISTER MARY MAGDALEN TORRES, SPC Provincial Superior
PAULINIAN ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION OF MANILA, INC. St. Paul College of Manila 680 Pedro Gil St., Malate, Manila 1070 Tel/Fax: 523-4259 Trunkline 524-5687 loc. 229 spcmalumnae@yahoo.com 2004 SPC Centennial Homecoming Project 15 May 2003 Dear Fellow Paulinians, On January 25, 2004, we will hold our traditional annual General Alumnae Homecoming at the St. Paul College of Manila campus. The celebration will be special and doubly significant because aside from January 25 being the feast day of St. Paul, 2004 marks the 100th year of the St. Paul de Chartres Congregation in the Philippines. The silver jubilarian class hosting the homecoming is H.S. batch 1979. Celebrating with them are the other jubilarian classes of both college and high school levels, as follows: 1934, 1939 & 1944 (diamond), 1949 (emerald), 1954 (golden), 1959 (sapphire), 1964 (ruby), 1969 (coral) and 1974 (pearl). Together with the alumnae association, they have been meeting regularly to plan and map out the details of the preparations that will ensure the success of our homecoming. The homecoming show as conceptualized has the theme “Living the Paulinian 5C’s (core values: charity, commission, community, charism, cross-glory). The show will highlight the history of the St. Paul de Chartres Congregation in the Philippines and of St. Paul College of Manila, interspersed with significant events in Philippine and world history with particular emphasis on development of the arts during those times and depicted in song and dance by the jubilarian classes. The show hopes to bring back the days when St. Paul College of Manila was known as the “Broadway of Herran.” Other highlights will include the recognition of: (1) St. Paul nuns celebrating their jubilee year, (2) the Paulinian 5C awardees and (3) loyal SPCM staff members who have and continue to serve the Paulinian community. In tandem with the preparations for the homecoming program is a fund-raising project dubbed the “St. Paul Centennial Raffle” which aims, in one swell sweep, (1) to raise the amount to support the homecoming celebration, (2) to provide our alumnae association with much needed funds so it can serve our alumnae better, (3) to donate a sum for the museum project of our alma mater; (4) to donate a sum for the construction of the new St. Paul Vigil House for our elderly nuns and (5) to donate a sum for Our Lady of Peace Hospital administered by Paulinian nuns led by Sr. Eva Fidela Maamo, SPC, MD with Fr. James B. Reuter, S.J. A project of this magnitude can hopefully get the entire Paulinian community working together for a cause. What’s more, you get the chance to win a Toyota Corolla Altis, the grand prize! A raffle ticket costs only P200 and each booklet (20 tickets) sold comes with a free raffle ticket. For a minimum of five (5) booklets sold, your batch will get a 20% commission thus you can make this your class’ fund raiser too. Duration of the raffle is from April 22 to September 15, 2003. Raffle draw is on October 25, 2003, the formal launch of the centennial celebration of the St. Paul de Chartres Congregation in the Philippines. There are tentative plans to hold a bingo social at the SPCM quadrangle on the day of the raffle draw. We have formed two (2) committees: the Homecoming Committee and the Fundraising Committee to see the projects through. Rosanna Escareal-Velasco HS'75, PAAM 1st Vice President, chairs the Board’s Ways and Means Committee with Carolina Escareal-Go of H.S. Batch `79 as co-chair. Elnora Aquilizan-Duran HS'64 chairs the Board’s Homecoming Committee with Nadine V. Niguidula of H.S. Batch `79 as co-chair. Our secretariat c/o Veronica Villanueva BSC '81 may be reached at Tel. Nos. 523-4259 or 524-5687 loc. 229. We therefore ask each jubilarian class to designate two (2) representatives of your batch, one for each committee. The committee members will meet once a month from hereon, every third Tuesday from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at the SPCM Conference Room A. Meanwhile, for the non-jubilarian classes, we ask your much needed help for our fund-raising project. We also ask, this early, that you reserve January 25, 2004 in your calendar and plan to be with your fellow alumnae on homecoming day. Let us give these projects our wholehearted support. Together we can make this fundraiser a huge success and provide for all our intended beneficiaries. Together we can ensure that Homecoming 2004 will be another wonderful, memorable and joyous occasion for all alumnae, teachers and nuns, families and friends. Thank you and we look forward to all of us working well together. Very truly yours, MARITES GUIDOTE-AGUIRRE, HS'66, AB'71 President, Paulinian Alumnae Association of Manila CAROLINA ESCAREAL-GO Chairperson, H.S. Class `79 Endorsed by: SR. This is one of several pictures sent by Sol, of the arrival and visit of Sr. Mary Magdalen Torres (Sr. Provincial superior), Sr. Fe Villanueva (the sister of Patsy) in D.C. With them in the pictures is Sr. Merceditas Ang (a lawyer whose trip coincided with the teleconference of the PGFI Board members. This picture and the others (the rest are posted at MyFamily.com) were taken at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC last Tuesday, 29 July 2003. The sisters were treated to lunch by Sol and Lito, and Delia and Fred. They proceeded to the Ilagan home for dessert and to teleconference with the PGFI Board members to "further explain the projects of SPC (including the Vigil House)". They were also given a tour of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in DC, and (after buffet lunch) the Basilica of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, both in Emmittsburg, Maryland. They also went shopping for shoes, pasalubong for the sisters back home. They left for NY last Saturday and were picked up at the Penn Station by Sol's daughter, Arlene.
SPC ILOILO EAST COAST REUNION Sheraton Convention Center Atlantic City, New Jersey Saturday, August 9, 2003 Delivered by: Soledad Balda-Ilagan, SPCMHS’65 Fellow Paulinians, Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening “maayong gabi sa inyong natanan”. As your Paulinian Global Foundation, Inc. President, I am here tonight to talk to you about this Foundation, how it came about and what it’s plans are for the future ahead of us. But first, let me congratulate the organizers of this event, you have done a great and fantastic job! Congratulations also to each one of you for coming together tonight, thus confirming the commitment you have for your alma mater, St Paul’s College, and of course, for each other and for your respective classes. I am honored to be invited to this memorable event and wish that there would be many more of this kind in other SPC schools to follow what you have started. The birth of the PGFI came about in September of last year when our class (SPC Manila HS1965) held our first USA reunion ever in Washington, D.C. Coincidental to this reunion was the visit of the SPC Provincial Superior, Sr. Mary Magdalen Torres. She was accompanied by Sr. Zeta Rivero (who is here with us tonight) and Sr. Eva Maamo. In this visit, a forum was organized wherein the sisters each gave a talk about their outreach programs to help the poor and the disadvantaged in the Philippines as well as the need to improve the environment and care of the Sisters in the Vigil House. They talked about: 1. the planned construction of the New Vigil House 2. the Pastoral Center in Quezon City which would cater to the elderly women and street children 3. the Health and Counseling Clinic in Baguio City Of these three projects there was an overwhelming support for the Vigil House from our class. Sr. Magdalen mentioned that from the meetings she had here in the US, Paulinians preferred that their donations be tax-deductible just as when they give a donation to their own charities. And this is the reason why the Paulinian Global Foundation was formed. That same evening, an election of officers of the PGFI was held which explains why most of the current officers of PGFI belong to the class of SPCMHS’65. With me tonight is another officer, the Paulinian Foundation’s treasurer, Ms. Delia Hernandez-Alladin. Sr. Magdalen’s trip was followed by the visit of Sr. Nieves Cueto and Sr. Mary George Siriban (in November 2002). They assisted the officers in preparing incorporation papers and application for a not-for-profit organization. They also visited various cities here in the USA to campaign for support of their outreach program. We are happy to let you all know that PGFI had been approved as a not-for-profit organization. Presently, we are awaiting approval from the IRS of our application for a tax-exempt status. By the way, aside from the 4 officers, the Foundation has 8 Paulinians who serve as Board Members for a 2-year term. With still 2 positions open for in the board, Sr. Magdalen has appointed Ms. Dolly Kochoa who is your Vice President and who has accepted the position. Thank you Dolly. As you may already know the present Vigil House is located in SPC Quezon City. This House was built in the early 1960s to accommodate at that time some 20 ageing sisters, our mentors, who no longer have the strength and stamina to continue on with nursing and teaching or other worthwhile activities – remember, the sisters retire to the Vigil House only when they are no longer able to be of service (most nuns are active up to when they reach 70 or some even older). Now, there are about 75 of them cramped in a space good for only 40. And several more in the provinces are waiting their turn once some space would be made available for them. This is why the much needed new Vigil House was considered. A lot in Taytay, Rizal is now envisioned for this new Vigil House. Last month, they had a ground breaking to start construction. Fellow Paulinians, a lot more needs to be done. Donations of medicines, medical equipment/supplies and non-perishable food for the Vigil House are most needed. Doctors have already committed to support this endeavor and donate their services to these ageing sisters. The other two projects are self-explanatory – one is for the Pastoral Center for battered and abused women and children. This Center will be located in Quezon City at the same place where the present Vigil House is. This will only be operational as soon as the building for the New Vigil House is completed. The other project is the health and counseling clinic for the elderly and the poor in Baguio City. This project is now on-going and operational, nevertheless it still would need your support for its subsistence. May I invite you all to read the hand-outs which will be distributed to you about the Vigil House. I would also like to encourage you to visit the PGFI website. This is also indicated in the hand-outs. I personally would like to appeal to your kindness and generosity – to help our ageing Sisters and mentors. Once again, thank you for affording me the opportunity to speak about the Paulinian Global Foundation, Inc. This is our alma mater’s foundation – let’s take good care of it.
