Acolytes of the Stars Inspired by old Human religions, the Acolyte of the Stars are a group of Deists that have several worlds in this quadrant. The Acolytes prefer a relatively primitive lifestyle, reminiscent of Mid-21st Century Earth rural communities. Acolyte missionaries regularly assist nearby Federation worlds during times of need or disaster. Major Acolyte settlement are Nikolasi on Pollux V, Germania on Maddux II, and Kentigern on Haven's World. ("Demon World" [25A])

Cereth is one of the younger members of the clan and spent three years in the Federation detention compound on Beta Carina VI for assault on an Andorian official administering a supply depot on Menalvagor. Like his brothers and father, he is daring and impulsive, but a completist when planning activities. He is highly charismatic, but possesses nothing in the way of skills for commanding any sort of military craft/starship. In 2268, Cereth and his followers hijacked the USS Masada in an attempt to exchange the hostages for the release of Elasi political prisoners. Cereth's plans were foiled by Captain Kirk and the USS Enterprise, and Cereth was captured. ("Hijacked" [25A]) Cereth has the same face as nearly all other Elasi captains encountered in 25A and JR.

Alpha Quadrant Designation of the galactic quadrant in which most of the United Federation of Planets resides. Cross-reference entry: Quadrant.
Alphans Single-celled organisms which live on Onyius II. They have an extremely high reproductive rate, but a very poor metabolism and an extremely short life span. They were enemies of the Omegans, another form of single-celled organisms who also live on the planet. In 2269, at Captain Kirk's suggestion, the Alphans agreed to overcome their differences with the Omegans by joining with the Omegans to form a new species, the Gammans. ("Light and Darkness" [JR])
Andorian Mining Consortium (AMC) A charted Federation mining operation, currently the third largest private corporation in the Federation. AMC was a minor player in the world of developing raw materials until they completed the research and development project they have named Atlas. AMC now have extensive mining operations, on asteroids and on Class M worlds. There is increasing pressure from some planetary ecologists to investigate their practices.
Andorians A member race of the Federation, noted for their antenna-like sensory organs and their unusual blue skin pigmentation. The Andorian colonization of Menalvagor, which was done centuries ago, has resulted in considerable problems for the Federation.
Andromeda Galaxy A large spiral galaxy, the closest neighbour to the Milky Way Galaxy. It is approximately one million light years away. The only known race that the Federation has encountered from this galaxy are the imperialistic Kelvans. ("By Any Other Name" [TOS])

Anti-matter Matter whose electrical charge properties are the opposite of that of matter. For example: in the nucleus of an atom of matter, protons have a positive charge, where in the nucleus of an anti-matter, antiprotons have a negative charge. When a particle of anti-matter comes in contact with matter, a matter anti-matter reaction results causing the annihilation of both particles and the release of the total energy stored in both particles. A controlled matter anti-matter reaction is the power source of a warp drive. Cross-reference entry: Warp Drive.

Antos IV A planet famed for its inhabitants' benevolent, peaceful pursuits. The natives possess the secret of cellular metamorphosis, the ability to change shape and recreate any form they wish. ("Whom Gods Destroy" [TOS])
April, Robert T. First Captain of the USS Enterprise. Captain April assumed command of the starship in 2245 and helmed the Enterprise's first five-year mission of deep-space exploration. April was succeeded as Enterprise Captain by Christopher Pike, and later by James T. Kirk. Captain April is totally conjectural, but was included in the official "Star Trek Encyclopedia" at Gene Roddenberry's request that the Enterprise was a starship with some history before Kirk assumed command. The planet was, unfortunately, home to a cumulo-haevus, which destroyed most of the original landing party that encountered it. Cross-reference entry: Cumulo-haevus. ("Obsession" [TOS]) The official ST Encyclopedia has no entry for "Argus X" even though the planet's name was mentioned in the episode.
ARK-7 A highly sophisticated arcology project looking into the origins of life in the universe. The project is being led by Dr. Carol Marcus who, along with a crew of seventeen members, is dedicated to unlocking the mystery of life. Further information is classified. In 2268, the Romulans raided ARK-7 under the assumption that the station was developing a deadly biological weapon for use against their empire. Through the efforts of the crew of the USS Enterprise, the Romulans were successfully repealed from the station. ("Love's Labor Jeopardized" [25A])

It also provided the possibility of return to the present. The device was destroyed when the sun of the system went nova. ("All Out Yesterdays" [TOS])
Atlas An invention of the Andorian Mining Consortium (AMC). Atlas is a computer capable of working in conjunction with a transporter to teleport sections of mineral deposits out of the ground, sending low percentage ore back to where it came from, while sending high-grade ore to a processing facility. Atlas is capable of pinpoint accuracy, and AMC officials claim that Atlas does not disturb the environment as much as traditional techniques, a claim disputed by some planetary ecologists.

Balkosi A humanoid race just entering the stone-age level of development. The Balkosi inhabit the planet Balkos III. Preliminary studies suggest that this race is relatively new to the planet and should not have reached this level of development in this short amount of time. Further studies are currently being conducted to explain this situation. In 2269, it was discovered that an unknown faction was subjecting the Balkosi to genetically engineered pheromones, inducing violent behaviour within the population. The crew of the USS Enterprise managed to put a stop to this, therefore releasing the Balkosi from outside influence and allowing them to determine their own destiny. ("Sentinel" [JR])

Beta III A Class M world in the star system 6-11, home to an indigenous population that were formerly enslaved to an artificial intelligence named Landru. The planet is now considered a developing world, and is receiving small amounts of Federation assistance, with the goal of cultural stabilization. ("Return of the Archons" [TOS]) The ST Encyclopedia states that Beta III is in the star system C-111, not 6-11.

Before initiating contact with other races, the Brassica first subject representatives of the various races through a series of tests to determine if they were worthy of being contacted by them. Some of these tests involve the manipulation in the culture or the natural development of other races on a planetary scale, supposedly for a noble purpose or goal. ("...Yet There Is Method In It" [JR])
Breddell, Ies Once a Vardaine scientist and administrator, leader of an anti-Federation faction on Vardaine and head of a covert Constitution-class starship building program on Vardaine. In 2258, Dr. Breddell's scheme to overthrow the Vardaine Council was exposed by Lieutenant James T. Kirk, and he was dismissed from the Vardaine Science Council. Breddell was presumed to have died in battle with the USS Enterprise in 2268. The third planet in the Brightstar system was settled 50 years ago (in 2218) by the Interstellar Mining and Development Company (IMDC). The IMDC has maintained a very clean mining operation despite dealing with dangerous radioactives and has actively engaged in terraforming the planet. Within the last dozen years, Brightstar III has become known as a fledging artist colony with IMDC providing generous stipends to artists who wish to pursue their work in a supportive atmosphere. Nobel Prize-winning Vulcan poet Virchan is the most recent artist to take up residence on the planet. The reference to Virchan has been removed from the CD-ROM version of JR.
