T

T'Pau Vulcan matriach, whose actions during first contact between Humans and Vulcans were responsible for the favourable relations between Vulcan and Earth ever since. T'Pau is one of the most respected leaders in the history of the Federation. She is the only person to turn down a seat on the Federation Council. ("Amok Time" [TOS]) I'm not sure whether T'Pau was present during Earth's first contact with Vulcans in 2063 as seen in ST:FC, so let's just assume that she was present for the sake of this entry. This would mean that 204 years had passed between T'Pau's presence at first contact and when T'Pau presided at Spock's near-wedding in 2267, still well within a Vulcan's lifespan.
Taraz, Commander Klingon officer, Captain of the Klingon battle cruiser IKS Nizra. In 2268, Commander Taraz ordered the Nizra to approach the planet Zamphor, located in Federation space, in order to pursue the being known as Quetzecoatl, who was accused of having caused a genocide on the Klingon world Hrakkour IV. ("The Feathered Serpent" [25A])
Tellarites A race which joined the Federation several decades ago. The Tellarites are considered aggressive by Federation standards, and have had numerous arguments with other member planets of the Federation.
Tergen III A Class M planet, recently evacuated after its sun entered its expansion phase of its cycle. The only remaining inhabitants is the Tergen Solar Expansion Observation Project. Tergen immigrants have allegedly been pressed into cheap labour on Vardaine. Numerous allegations of sentient rights violations have prompted a Federation investigation.

Three Systems War A war in the early 22nd Century between the Antoshi and the Vurians in which the Vuriains were exterminated. ("Voids" [JR])
Tholian Web A net of fixed forcefield beams, employed by the Tholians, used in combat when an enemy ship is disabled. It is yet unknown what the Tholians do to a ship after they have completed the web. ("The Tholian Web" [TOS])
Tholians A species with which the Federation has had only minimal contact. First contact between Humans and Tholians took place in 2152. They are apparently a crystalline lifeform. They are noted for their forcefield generating weapon, known as the Tholian web; Starfleet tactical analysis indicates that they prefer to disable and study enemy vessels, rather than destroy them. The fate of the crew of these vessels is as yet undetermined. ("The Tholian Web" [TOS])
Tiberius First Century A.D. Roman despot, second emperor of the Roman Empire. Tiberius is also the middle name of Captain James Kirk of the USS Enterprise.

Timehole Unusual temporal phenomenon, a breach of space-time, a zone of null temporal stability. Possibly similar to the effect of the Guardian of Forever, known timeholes are studied by Federation temporal scientists.

Tinka, Marius Dr. Marius Tinka has long been acknowledged as a leading expert on black holes and similar phenomena. He occupies the prestigious Hawking Chair in astronomy and quantum physics at the Izar Institute of Astronomy. Dr. Tinka has a reputation for looking beyond the purely physical and has received wide acclaim for his book of poems concerning speculations on the spiritual aspects of theoretical science. He has often joked that were he not a dedicated scientist he would have been a prophet preaching the wonders of the universe.

Medical addenda: Dr. Tinka was diagnosed as having a brain tumour five years ago, but underwent treatment for the condition. His disease is in remission and was verified to be so as of his physical preparation for the
Jefferson's Journey. The cancer was a benign meningioma so even if it does recur, the prognosis is excellent for a complete cure provided quality medical care is possible.
Tlaoxac The preist of Quetzecoatl. In 2268, the crew of USS Enterprise encountered a being who claimed to be Tlaoxac at the planet Zamphor. ("The Feathered Serpent" [25A])
TLTDH Gas The chemical compound tantalum bi-lithium thalo-dihydroxide. Colourless, odourless, nonflammable, gaseous at 1 atm and temperatures within the Human norm. Early anesthetic among Vulcans and Romulans, in whom it produces laughte, feelings of exhilaration, euphoria; sometimes leading to unconsciousness. In post-industrial/pre-spaceflight era, a social problem evolved when crude TLTDH became popular to "cook up" from non-conductive tantalo-lithial compounds commonly used as electrical insulation. It is commonly known as Romulan laughing gas. ("Love's Labor Jeopardized" [25A])
Torpedo A delivery system, used by many races in warfare in space. The most powerful known system is the Romulan plasma torpedo, followed by the photon torpedoes used by the Federation, Klingons, and Elasi.

Tractor Beam A focused linear graviton force beam that, over a relatively short distance, allows a vessel to haul or otherwise physically manipulate a targeted object. Tractor beam technology is possessed by many known spacefaring cultures, including the Federation and the Klingons.
Transporters Matter-energy conversion transceiver technology, developed independently on several worlds, the transporter provides an efficient by converting matter to energy, transmitting it, and reassembling it at a distance. The transporter room duty station on a Constitution-class starship is located on Deck 7.
Trelane Also known as the Squire of Gothos. An entity posing as a self-styled retired Human general of 19th Century Earth, in actuality, a naughty child of an extremely powerful alien race. His attempt to commandeer the USS Enterprise was foiled by Captain James Kirk and by the intervention of Trelane's parents, who took him away (presumably to another dimension) for punishment. In 2269, Trelane was responsible for the disappearance of three Federation starships and compelling their crew to participate in his fantasy of World War I Germany. The starships and their crew were later recovered by the USS Enterprise. ("No Man's Land" [JR])
Tri-Dimensional Chess Also known as three-dimensional chess and 3-D chess, a multi-level game derived from the ancient Earth board game, chess. Tri-dimensional chess is both an exercise in logic and outwitting one's opponents.

Tri-Rho Nautica A Federation world near the Klingon Neutral Zone. The Tri-Rho Nautica shipyards orbiting Tri-Rho Nautica III are one of the largest in the Federation.

Triacus
A Class M planet. Triacus was visited and colonized in 2268 by the Starnes Expedition. There, the expedition came upon a noncorporeal being calling himself the Gorgan. This entity forced the adults of the colony into mass suicide, and then tried to take over the USS Enterprise by using the children. Though the Gorgan on the Enterprise was destroyed, the Triacus system has been declared off-limits to Federation ships until the nature of the entity and whether there are any others can be determined. ("And the Children Shall Lead" [TOS])
Tribbles Discovered by Cyrano Jones on a planet whose location is unknown, these charming animals have, with some alterations, become a favourite pet on many Federation planets. They project empathic waves that stimulate the brain's pleasure centers of most known humanoids (although they irritate the Klingon brain). Their rapid reproduction requires all tribbles to be neutered prior to sale. ("The Trouble with Tribbles" [TOS])
Tricorder A portable sensing-recording-computing appliance featuring state of the art technology. There are separate models for science, engineering and medical officers.
Tyler, Garth Starfleet Captain, currently Captain of the USS Olympus Mons. Age 49 (as of 2269), born on New Sparta, Mars, in 2220; graduated from Starfleet Academy on Stardate 1437.3.
