V Valiant, SS Early Earth interstellar vessel that embarked on exploratory mission in 2065 and was lost when it was swept into the galactic barrier. Shortly after contact with the barrier, at least one crew member mutated into a powerful, malevolent psychic, forcing the ship's captain to destroy the Valiant to prevent the escape of the mutated crew member. Vardaine The name for the third planet in the Harlequin system, Vardaine is a reclusive member of the Federation, formed by the isolationist Humans in the late 22nd Century. Vardaine is a technocratic society which has received Federation assistance on numerous occasions, but has not shared its own scientific advances. Allegedly sponsoring banned eugenics experiments; the inquiry of Stardate 4650.6 was indefinitely postponed at the request of the Vardaine government. Recent alleged rights violations of Tergen III immigrants has prompted further Federation investigation. Virchan A Nobel Laureate poet, she is credited with helping Humans understand the Vulcan mind through her work. While poetry is, in Human terms, the written medium that most perfectly captures raw emotions, this emotionless Vulcan has mastered the artform. She has been likened to the Bach of poetry, the illusion being drawn between her coldly logical poems and the mechanistic structures of Bach's work. The structures of her poems have a mathematical pattern to them that early critics decried them as "contrived". They changed their minds when her poem, "Stellar Chrysalis", was published. "Formless gas coalescing / to fusion furnace bright / collapsing into a grave of formless void." While describing in clear, clinical terms what happened in life of a star, it imparted a viable cotent to the subject that touched on the miracles of life and the nature of mortality. The repetition of the word "formless", experts pointed out, started the poem cycling through a circle of birth, life and death. |

Vizznr The projection representative of the Alphans, single-celled organisms which live on Onyius II. Vizznr, also referred to as Dominator of the Alphans, pleaded Captain Kirk to help the Alphans to destroy their enemy, the Omegans, until Kirk convinced Vizznr that both races shared many similarities and Vizznr agreed to a joining between the races as a step towards overcoming their differences. Vulcan Class-M planet, homeworld to the Vulcans. The planet is hot and arid, and it has no moons.
Vulcans One of the most prominent members of the Federation, a society devoted to logic and pacifism. The concepts of the IDIC and nome are only two of their contributions to galactic philosophy. Vulcans were the first extraterrestrials to be encountered by Humans. First contact took place in 2063, when a Vulcan ship detected the warp signature of Earth's first faster-than-light spacecraft, the Phoenix. They realized that Humans had discovered warp drive and decided to initiate contact. Famous Vulcans include Surak, Sarek, and T'Pau. Vulcan is also the residence of the poet Virchan. The entry also states that Virchan is Human, although Virchan's entry states that she is a Vulcan. | ![]() |

Vurians A race native to Viga III, with minor psionic talents. They were exterminated by the Antoshi in the Three Systems War during the early 22nd Century. ("Voids" [JR]) Kirk was quite off when he mentioned that the Vurians died out at around the same time when Cochrane invented the warp drive (in 2063), while McCoy was more accurate when he said that there hadn't been any Vurians for almost 150 years (which would place their extinction at around 2119).
W Warp Drive A propulsion device common on Federation, Klingon, and the latest generation of Romulan starships. The warp drive was originally developed in the 21st Century by Zefram Cochrane of Alpha Centauri. The warp propulsion system consists of matter/anti-matter reaction assembly, power transfer conduits, and warp engine nacelles. The immense force created by a controlled matter-anti-matter reaction distorts the fabric of space-time. The shape of this "warp" is further subjected to a spatial distortion generator allowing forward faster-than-light momentum through the resulting spatial continuum called "subspace". Cross-reference entries: Subspace and Warp Factor. |

Warp Factor Unit of measure for faster-than-light velocities where warp factor one is the speed of light. The theoretical maximum speed according to current scientific knowledge is warp factor ten, although some alien technologies have reportedly achieved speeds beyond this limit. Cross-reference entries: Subspace and Warp Drive. The limit of warp 10 comes from TNG, although it should be stated here that TOS and TNG each used different warp factor scales, whereby the TOS scale apparently has no upper limit. Warp Speed Generic term for velocities of warp factor. Cross-reference entry: Warp Factor. World War III A bloody conflict that was fought with nuclear weapons which occurred on Earth around 2053. The war claimed nearly 600 million casualties. Colonel Green was one of the military leaders in this war. Earth's climate experienced a "nuclear winter" caused by thousands of tons of dust and debris kicked into the atmosphere by nuclear explosions. ("The Savage Curtain" [TOS]) and (ST:FC). |

X X-ray Pulsars A collapsed star that emits X-rays in a tight band at a rate equal to its cyclical rotation. X-ray pulsars are known to speed up and slow down, as well as increase and decrease in intensity, but a mechanism for that change has not been determined. Ongoing research projects are underway to isolate factors concerning the nature of the phenomena. |
