P Pao Yar, IKS Klingon battle criuser commanded by Captain Klarr. In 2269, the IKS Pao Yar investigated a massive starship called the Compassion, which threatened to land on the capital city on Atabis, a planet in the Klingon Neutral Zone. ("Though This Be Madness..." [JR]) Parsec A unit of linear measure, representing 3.26 light years. Patterson, Richard Cornelius Deceased Starfleet Captain, most recently assigned command of the USS Republic. Renowned for his tactical engagements against the Klingons before the intervention of the Organians, Captain Patterson was regarded as an expert military strategist before his death in battle against the Vardaine in 2268. Patterson was considered a diplomat of the first rank. He had been decorated numerous times for bravery, particularly against the Klingons. ("Vengeance" [25A]) Pavo (Full name: P-14232 Pavo) Romulan cutter/scout ship, current commander unknown. Normal crew complement is 16. Four beam weapons, two on each wing, are standard armament for this class of ship, but their power level makes them no threat to a shielded starship. |

Phaser The chief weapon of a Federation starship and Federation personnel, derived from lasers. Phasers can produce cellular feedback that can stun organic life, or can disrupt and destroy molecular bonds. Hand-held phasers are considered a critical part of a landing party's inventory. | ![]() |

Phoenix The first spacecraft launched from Earth to travel faster than light. The Phoenix was built by space pioneer Zefram Cochrane. It was built from an old Titan V nuclear missile, modified with a small crew cabin and twin warp nacelles. The Phoenix made its historic first warp flight in 2063. The flight of the Phoenix was directly responsible for Earth's first contact with extraterrestrials, the Vulcans, and the event ushered in a new era for humankind. (ST:FC)
Photon Torpedo The most powerful weapon of a starship, a photon torpedo has roughly twice the energy yield as a phaser.
Pike, Christopher Second Captain of the USS Enterprise. Captain Pike commanded the Enterprise from 2250 to 2263. He is currently goodwill ambassador to Talos IV, an otherwise restricted world. | ![]() |

Pirates Ships that prey on other ships are unfortunately, still common in the Federation. Since the Babel Peace Conference, most pirate attacks have come from the Elasi Clan, based somewhere near Elasi Prime. Cross-reference entry: Elasi Prime.

Planet Killer An immense, fully automated weapon that was discovered in 2267. The Planet Killer would break up planets with an antiproton beam and use the material as fuel. Its hull was also made of pure neutronium, making it completely impervious to standard Federation phasers and photon torpedoes. The machine was finally rendered harmless when Captain James T. Kirk programmed the USS Constellation to self-destruct inside its maw. The remnants of the Planet Killer are currently in the possession of the Dnari A-6 Science Institute on Sygnet-Alpha IV. There is a school of thought that subscribes to the theory that the galactic barrier was originally erected by a now-gone race to protect the Milky War Galaxy from these Planet Killers. It that is true, then it is obviously not 100% effective. ("The Doomsday Machine" [TOS])
Plasma Torpedo Romulan ship-based weapon, of extreme power but limited range. Platonius A planet inhabited by a race who call themselves the Platonians. The Platonians were originally from the Sahndara system until their sun went nova millennia ago. During this time the race visited Earth briefly during the Greek Empire, and they became a followers of the philosopher Plato. When the Greek Empire ended, the Platoinans moved to their present planet. The Platonians ingest a substance called kironide, which causes telekinetic powers to manifest. The USS Enterprise made first contact with Platonius in 2268. ("Plato's Stepchildren" [TOS]) Pollux V An inhabited satellite of Pollux-B. Pollux V has lately emerged from an ice age caused by large meteor strikes. It has recently been colonized by the Acolytes of the Stars religious sect. The planet is home to a wide variety of plant life, but insects and other lower lifeforms are the only known animals. ("Demon World" [25A]) The entry had actually referred to the "Pollux V system", which was inconsistent since "Pollux V" sounds more like a planet. In JR (CD-ROM version), the computer erroneously labels this entry as "Pollux IV system". In the ST Encyclopedia, both Pollux IV and Pollux V refers to planets in the Beta Geminorum (Pollux) system as according to "Who Mourns for Adonais?" (TOS). So, the Pollux V in 25A could be referring to the very same planet. Praetor Title of the leader of the Romulan Star Empire. Praetus Romulan planet near the Federation-Romulan Neutral Zone. Praetus is a major center of Romulan military activity. |

Preax, Ardea The Romulan Centurion who, in 2268, led a raid on Station ARK-7 on the assumption that the station was developing a deadly biological weapon against the Romulans. Upon arriving on ARK-7, Preax and his crew were infected with the Oroborus virus, a virus accidentally created on the station which was leathal to Romulan physiology. An away team from the USS Enterprise arrived at ARK-7 shortly after and developed a cure to the virus, which was then used to treat the Romulans. Preax was impressed by the compassion displayed by the Starfleet crew and agreed to leave the station peacefully. ("Love's Labor Jeopardized" [25A])
Prelate A title of religious leadership, most commonly used by the governors of the Acolytes of the Stars. ("Demon World" [25A]) Prime Directive Starfleet General Order One, the most important law governing Federation space exploration. The Prime Directive dictates that no Starfleet personnel will interfere with the natural development of life on a planet through direct intervention or revelation of technological information to the natives. The most serious violation of the Prime Directive was the Galahad Incident in 2208. Proto-universe Phenomenon Phenomenon involving the leakage of matter and energy and space-time distortions caused by the Big Bang in a parallel universe. The only known instance of the proto-universe phenomenon is Gravity's End under observation by Espoir Station. Cross-reference entry: Gravity's End. ("Federation" [JR]) Proxtrey The third planet in the Alpha Proxima system. This Class M planet is widely habitable except for zones of extremely radioactivity on the southern continent. About one thousand years ago, the two dominant political systems, the Lucrs and the Sofs, engaged in a nuclear war that resulted in the deaths of three-quarters of the world's population through direct or collateral damage. Proxtrey's current civilization is non-space faring and does not have contact with the Federation. ("That Old Devil Moon" [25A]) |

Quadrant In interstellar mapping, a quadrant is one-fourth of the Milky Way Galaxy. The galaxy is divided into four quadrants, each forming a 90-degree pie wedge as seen from above or below the galaxy's plane. The four quadrants are labeled Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta. The Federation is mostly located in the Alpha Quadrant, although parts spill over into Beta. The Klingon and Romulan Empires are located in the Beta Quadrant, although they spill over into Alpha. Throughout TOS, the term "quadrant" was used inconsistently, at times refering to a fourth of the galaxy, while at others it seemed to be a portion of a smaller region. The current system of galactic quadrants was only firmly established during TNG, and ENT adheres to this system as well.
Quadrotriticale A four lobe combination wheat and rye grain that was genetically engineered in the 20th Century. Quadrotriticale was the only Earth grain that could be grown on Sherman's Planet, and thus was critical in the Federation's development of that world in 2267. ("The Trouble with Tribbles" [TOS])
Quelque The Lachian probe that discovered a new homeworld for the Lachian people several generations ago. The Quelque was recently recovered in the Nova Atar system and was displayed at the Smithsonian Annex on Nova Atar III. In 2269, the Federation planned to return the probe to the ruling Lachian family, the Seransi. However, another family, the Onacan, opposed this move and seized control of the museum, claiming rightful ownership of the probe. After the situation was peacefully resolved, the Federation decided to halt the return of the Quelque and send observers to mediate between the Seransi and the Onacan on the fate of the probe. Quetzecoatl A mythical Terran deity, worshipped by the Aztec culture. In 2268, the crew of USS Enterprise encountered a being who claimed to be Quetzecoatl on Zamphor. Quetzecoatl claimed to be weary of his godlike existence and requested for a surgery to remove a gland that gave him such powers so that he could become mortal. Following the operation, Quetzecoatl stood on trial on the Klingon world of Hrakkour IV, being accused by the Klingons of having caused a genocide on the planet. The trial was intervened by an entity indigenous to Hrakkour IV. The entity, Bialbi, judged Quetzecoatl to be innocent and instead blamed the Klingon governor, Admiral Vlict Kenka, for the genocide. At Captain James T. Kirk suggestion, Admiral Kenka allowed Quetzecoatl to go free in exchange for Bialbi to spare his own life. ("The Feathered Serpent" [25A]) The entry erroneously states that the Enterprise crew met Quetzecoatl on Pollux V. It should be Zamphor.
