Project - Water Filter

The PVC pipe carried the fresh water from the mountain stream to a filter. We built the filter out of concrete a few yards up the hill from the main water tank. The filter was about three feet high. The bottom of the filter was filled with large rocks gathered from the stream. The middle third of the filter was filled with charcoal. The top third of the filter was coarse sand. The purpose of the filter was to remove and contaminants from the water and make it safe to drink. The filter was covered with a large concrete lid.

First a level area had to be dug for the filter. Here is where we found the largest termite nest I have ever seen!

The base and the filter were tied together with rebar. Pipes were laid before pouring the concrete.

It is very important to get the base level. These water systems are designed to last fifteen years.

Sara inspects the finished product.

The water makes it to the filter! Don't worry, he will get out before I fill it.

Mike and Paul discuss the quality of the sand with Jiacom.

Now what happens if I turn this?

Success! This filter will be checked monthly by the villagers, and the sand will be cleaned periodically.
