Project - Piping the Water

The water source for the village was contaminated. Fresh water was found high up on the mountain in a clear mountain stream. The first step is the get the water from the stream to the village. PVC pipes were used to channel the water from a small dam to holding tanks in the village. The pipe needed to be buried to protect it from the elements. There were sections of the pipe that only the natives could get to. The pipe wound through jungle and steep hillsides to the village.

The pipe was brought in to the village by boat before our arrival.

The pipe needed to get from the village through the jungle to be connected to the dam.

The dam was built high in the mountain in a cool stream. The end of the pipe was cemented in and the intake had a screen on it to keep large sediment out.

We learned how to dig in the jungle. Roots and rocks were only the beginning of the challenge. Steep terrain and slippery mud made some areas accessible only to the Lahu.

The jungle was hot and sticky. Digging the trench was the hardest part of the project.

The key was to let the hoe do the work. The villagers were sure to keep an eye on us to make sure we were digging correctly.

We made it stretch all the way to the village. Over a kilometer and a half of pipe and trench through the jungle.

The pipe needed to be buried. This turned out to be much easier than digging the trench.
