It came down to the last play of the game. Twice.

. Ricky Williams swept left end with no time on the clock to win the game from New Orleans, but he established a slight lead for Brad Moses. That held up as Miami D went scoreless late Sunday. The next test was to keep Emmitt Smith out of the end zone on Monday night. Emmitt Smith on Monday night against the woeful Redskins. Automatic?

Not quite. Emmitt was tackled on the six yardline on the last offensive play of the game. The play set up the winning field goal for Dallas.

Moses got 15 points from Atlanta QBs as well as TDs from Williams, Hines Ward, and Antonio Freeman.

Best had a great game from Daunte Culpepper (19 points) and TDs from Cris Carter and Corey Dillon. For the second week in a row, Best had a back playing the Redskins at home that failed to score. Emmitt this week, Ron Dayne last week.

Whoever lost this game would fume over the 20 points left on the bench. Moses had two Bucs: Jaquez Green and Warrick Dunn. Dunn was out, in and then out B-Mos lineup. He scored twice. Best failed to start Ron Dayne or Laverneous Coles. Both were listed as questionable on the injury report, but both started and scored. Coles twice. The irony is that Best traded Dayne to Moses last year and Moses has been trying to get him every week this year.

McCowan 48 Cousins 46

It looked the Cousins was going to win his first game in the BRFL, then Marvin Harrison and Sebastian Janokowski went to work for McCowan. They combined for 24 points in the Sunday night game as McCowan rallied from 22 down. Perhaps he should buy them a drink, but in the case of Janokowski, it's probably not a good idea...

Cousins was off to a great start Sunday. Immediately he scored a quick 12 pointer with McNair to Dyson and then McNair and Eddie George scored as the Titans broke their season long slump. After the 1:00 games, CC led 46-10.

McCowan rallied with TDs from Lamar and Rod Smith in the 4:00 games before the late night heroics of Harrison and Janokowski. The win keeps DMC in first place with a 3-1-1 record. Cousins falls to 0-5.

Jackson 67 Rick Moses 33

Jackson took advantage of three combo TDs from SF QBs and Terrell Owens to rack up his biggest point total in three years. The victim was Rick Moses, who had been tied for the lead in BRFL points scored. With Philly off, R-Mo tried to combo Chicago QBs with Marcus Robinson. They netted 0 points, 48 points less than Jackson's combo. R-Mo did get another big game from Shawn Alexander and Ladainian Tomlinson scored for his fifth straight game (R-Mo had him benched in week 1).

Jackson has won his third straight game. In doing so, he has again avoided recording his 100th career BRFL loss. Three years ago, it took CJ a couple attempts to win his 100th, so the century milestone is a little hard to overcome on both ends...

Deitrich 41 Ricker 35

Michael Westbrook, fairly quiet all Monday night, hauled in a late touchdown pass breaking a 35 all tie and allowing Deitrich to slip pass Ricker. Deitrich moves to 2-3 thanks to a two TD day by Denver QBs and a TD from Antowain Smith.

Ricker's Rams were kept in check this week, netting 2 bonus points, but the non-Rams Kevin Johnson and Tyrone Wheatley both scored. Ricker falls to 2-3, but remained a game behind the leaders in the East.

Jones-Klingman 53 Brown 14

Every week, we doubt them. Every week they dominate. Jones Klingman remains the lone undefeated team in the league and they have won their eighth straight game. Nander Brown went down 53-14. Indy tossed two TDs and Priest Holmes scored twice. Curtis Martin hit paydirt as usual. And Ike Hillard, and old JK favorite, made his way back from injury and scored his first touchdown of teh season. With teh win, JK has now achieved a .500 lifetime record in the BRFL: 94-94-5... 15 seasons in the making, and they finally did it!

The game storyline was supposed to be JK's reunion with Marshall Faulk, the player that carried them to the title last year with his 26 TD season. Faulk was injured in this game. Terrible news for Brown. However, two good things. Faulk may be back sooner than later, and Brown, "Mr Right of First Refusal", already has Faulk's backup Trung Canidate. Canidate did score this week, but he wasn't started. None of Brown's starting players scored.

Cantrell 30 Outlaw 28

Hank Cantrell win his first game. Calvin Cousins came close. Cantrell held a four point lead over Outlaw and Stephen Davis on Monday night game and held on. Cousins, on the other hand lost, a 22 point lead to McCowan on a Sunday night game.

20 of Cantrell's 30 were a credit to his bottom feeding. Cleveland QBs scored 12 points and Maurice Smith scored 7.

Before we credit Hank's waiver wire work Outlaw left many many points on the pine. A couple of his usual starters, Bubba Franks and Kevan Barlow scored, but they were on the bench. Likes wise

Week 5 Preview

So at the quarter pole, who are the contenders and who are the pretenders:
  • Biggest Surprise: JK, yes the are the defending champs, but at the draft they looked a little disorganized. Yet they are undefeated. Their best players: Indy QBs and Curtis Martin. Two players that played on with worst BRFL teams last year. (Stroupe and Czupryna).
  • Biggest Disappointment: Deitrich. He's had the 13-0 regular season (1995). He's scored the most points in a season (2000). With no championships to his credit, he's not a "Mr December", but he's usually "Mr September, October and November".
  • Most Overrated: Best. 3-1 and has been able to beat a couple good teams (Brown, McCowan) on bad days while scoring in the 30s himself.
  • Most Underrated: Outlaw. He's better than one win with that lineup.
I wonder if the swammi will challenge me again this week. I was 4-2 last week to move to 16-7-1.

Ricker(2-2) (-8) vs Deitrich (1-3)

Bud is looking for a rebound after a dreadful 1-4 start, but can he get it this week against Ricker? Probably not. Ricker's Ram attack plays at home this week against the Giants. The Giants supposedly have a solid defense, but so did the Dolphins, and Kurt Warner tossed for four scores two weeks ago. Bud's Denver QB team, has a favorable match-up against the Seahawks, but QB is not Bud's problem, his players just aren't scoring, among the top 60 backs and receivers, Bud has just two players Antowain Smith and Correll Burkholder (who is off this week). Expect Ricker to remind Bud of better days, like last season when he was setting the league points record with the Rams QBs.

Brown (-2) 3-1 vs Jones/Klingman 4-0

Undefeated JK goes for their eighth straight win against Nander Brown, who along with Rick Moses, has been leading the league in scoring. JK defeated defeated Rick Moses in week 2, 52-51. I expect a similar game here. One reason, both QBs, Oakland and Indy, go head to head on a Sunday night game and a shootout is expected. Much like Bud vs STL QBs, JK will be visted by a ghost from last season, Marshall Faulk. Nander's back is second among backs and recievers in scoring. Who is number 1? JK's Curtis Martin. With a win, JK will move to .500 lifetime in the league. Here's how this game ends: Payton Manning connects with a 50 yard bomb to Nander's Jerome Pathon. Nander wins a squeaker.

Cantrell (0-4) vs Outlaw (1-2-1) (-11 1/2)

Hank Cantrell is also known as "Baskin-Robbins" because always picking up the "flavor of the week". This week, it was Michael Pittman. But eventually this kind of behavior produces rewards. Outlaw finds himself replacing three starters due to Philly's bye. Outlaw's top player, Ahman Green, faces the Baltimore defense. Does this mean Cantrell is ripe to win his first game? Yes, it does. Thanks to his bottom feeding and the fact that Randy Moss will be facing the Lions.

Best 3-1 (-5) vs Brad Moses (2-2)

The Vikes at home against the Lions is scheduled to be this week's "sure thing" in all the fantasy scouting reports. That should bode well for Best who may take the "Ricker Approach" and start Cris Carter and Byron Chamberlin this week. Last week, the fantasy "sure thing" was Ron Dayne against the Redskins. Dayne got hurt, so that didn't plan out. This week Best does get Emmitt Smith against the Redskins. Emmitt might be the BRFL's only player in a lineup for this Monday night battle of winless teams.

Both Best and B-Mo scored in the low 30s and won their games. B-Mo took a quartet of QBs into last weeks action and managed only a single touchdown. This Atlanta QBs will start and Best will counter with Terrance Mathis. Expect Best to win this one easy and continue to keep his lead in the East.

Rick Moses (3-1) (-3.5) vs Jackson (2-2)

Jackson has won two straight and has some good luck in the next two games as he faces the two highest scoring teams in the league in Rick Moses and Nander Brown. This week and next will be bye weeks for his opponents QBs. Rick Moses' Philly QBs are league's second ranked. However, Rick Moses is deeper than Philly QBs: Three solid backs. I expected R-Mo to win handily.

Cousins (0-4) vs McCowan (2-1-1) (-18.5)

McCowan has struggled in his last two games after opening the season with two 52 point wins. However, this week he can struggle again and not have a problem winning. Cousin's 0-3 Titans get to face Tampa Bay this week. McCowan>/b> to keep his slim lead in the West.
