Rick Moses broke a four game losing streak and busted out with a league record tying 90 points in whipping McCowan.
90 pointers have been recorded twice before:
R-Mo got a 4 TD game from Donavan McNabb and the broke it open in the nightcap with Shaun Alexander scoring
24 points thanks to 3 TDs and 266 yards, including an 88 yarder. It was the top performance by a back in the BRFL
this year (Corey Dillion had 23 in week 7). Duce Staley scored and had a 200 yard game. Qadry Ismail had a big Monday
Night game and pushed R-Mo to the record.
If there any bad news for R-Mo, it is that Edgerrin James, already idled for two weeks with a knee injury may miss the
rest of the season.
McCowan's loss tumbles him to third place in the West as both Jackson and Brad Moses were big winners. Marvin Harrison scored
21 of DMC's 39 points.

Jackson 62 Best 49
Jackson broke a four game losing streak to Best. The last time he scored this many points against Best, he LOST to him in
98 wk 14: Best 70 Jackson 62.
Jeff Garcia threw for four TDs,
two of which went to Terrell Owens. Jimmy Smith had a score and Jason Elam had a big game with 14 points.
One difference in this game was that Best's Min QB/Carter combo accounted for three scores combined, about half of Jackson's SF
combo. Ron Dayne and Corey Dillon added scores and John Carney had a big day with 13 points. The 49 points are the most scored
by Best in a losing game this year. He scored 48 in a loss to Brad Moses in week 5.

Jones-Klingman 78 Cantrell 21
8-1 Jones-Klingman continued to flex their muscles in whipping Cantrell by 57 points. That's the largest margin of victory in the BRFL
this season, topping Rick Moses' 51 point win this week. JK still maintains a four game plus tie breaker cushion on R-Mo with this win.
There are five games left, so the champagne should now be put on ice for the Central division championship celebration.
Curtis Martin continued his hot hand with three scores, Indy QBs scored three times and Joe Horn twice. Jeff Wilkins was among the
several kickers to have a good day with 12 points.
Hank got hammered, but didn't lose much ground in the fading East as he remains a game back of second. The Moss/Williams trade goes
in B-Mos favor this week as Moss scored and Ricky ran up and down the field, but did not cross the stripe. Worth noting Stacey Mack
scored twice, but he was benched.

Brown 49 Outlaw 43
Another key win for Nander has he has had the fortune of playing the league's weaker teams while the rest of his division falls back. For the
second week in a row, he is the only East team to win, and he opens up a two game lead. The bulk of Nander's points came from
Marshall Faulk who scored 16 despite playing 1/2 a game. Trung Canidate scored 8 in mop up duty, but remained on Nander's bench. Also
grabbing pine was the now healthy Bill Schoeder with 8 points. Despite the good scoring top to bottom, Oakland had to rally for Nander in the
night game with two TDS one to Tim Brown.
Outlaw jumped the gun on staring Michael Bennett. He didn;t play for the Vikes. Thus, the Splinter squad award goes to Kevan Barlow.
His 8 points would have given Outlaw the win. Still, good efforts from Miami QBs, James Thrash (scoring twice two weeks in row) and a dozen from
David Akers in a great week for kickers. Every point counts, and points may be the only route Outlaw has to the playoffs.

Cousins 26 Ricker 24
This is a head scratcher. The Rams score 48 points and Ricker loses - to Cousins! Ricker only received benefit from 6 of those 48 points and he
doubled up on it with Issac Bruce. Lots when wrong for BR this week. Ricker trades David Boston (who scored) and get back Warrick Dunn
and Mike Alstott. Ricker started Allstott, but Dunn scored. Then the Monday night follies. The McNair TD taken away at the end did not have an
impact on tis game., It was a Nedney field goal taken away that did. Nedney missed a field goal early, and then made another, but it was
taken away by penalty. Then on the retry, the snap goes sailing past the holder.
The recipient of this incredible good fortune is Cousins, who won the game Monday on a McNair TD pass. Not wanting to double his pleasure,
he left the catcher, Kevin Dyson, on the bench. Curtis Conway accounted for Cousins other score. Cousins is 2-7 going into the "Calvin Bowl"
next week.

Brad Moses 52 Deitrich 42
B-Mo went trading last week looking for recievers. He picked up two under performing studs in Randy Moss and David Boston and both paid
dividends this week with scores. Antonio Freeman, the forgotten man, also scored. New Orleans QBs scored 15 as they bounced back in
shootout with the 49'ers. What backs remain on B-Mos team are Terrell Davis and Garrison Hearst. A hell of a backfield in '98, but
more miss than hit since then. Both contributed bonus points this week, but did not score. Both looked a little gimpy at the end of the
day. Davis in particular...he'll be out a couple weeks (again). Fortunately B-Mo was shrewed enough to get Mike Anderson in the Moss
deal.
In discussing Bud's chances this week, we noted in the preview that scoring was down. Well, week 9, at nearly 48 ppg was the highest scoring
week of the year. Bud had a decent week, scoring 42 and was one of three teams over 40 to lose. Denver QBs scored twice and Antowain Smith
had a two score game. The bets of the week concerned Bud's Dominic Rhodes. Rhodes did do much, but new that Edgerrin James might be
out for the year means that Rhodes is nore than a "rent-a-back". However getting wins to catch R-Mo in a division dominated by JK might be
a tall order.

Welcome to week 9. It's the time of the year where every seems to issue their midseason report cards. We are going to do it a little different
hear. We will assess each team's playoff chances based on how one would read an injury report.
- Ricker: Ricker has been running hot and cold all season depending on how the Rams do. In is favor is the fact that he plays in a
very tight division and that he scores a lot of points. Currently he sits in a points slot, but might be in trouble if the Moses Brothers and
Jackson falls out of second place. The Rams schedule is very soft down the stretch, so he could gather lots of points. Playoff Chances: Probable.
- Brown: Brown sits in first place thanks to a win last week, but the East remains tight. In his favor is the fact that he has scored
lots of points so far. Oakland's schedule is average. Probable
- Cantrell:
Hank's got out to an awful start, and still has difficulty scoring. One problem among others is a lack off production for the QB position.
The Jets are a running team and have a week run defense. Therefore Jet games tend to be fast moving and low scoring. The other QB,
the Browns have a solid defense and are not prone to shootouts. Randy Moss, a popular choice for first half bust, needs to shake it off.
Playoff Chances: Doubtful
- Best: Best lost a couple "should have won" games to Bud and B-Mo, but surprised McCowan and Brown, two solid teams. Best isn't scoring
at a solid clip and will need to hold onto second place. He's not likely to do well if he falls into a points competition. The Vikings
have a brutal schedule, and a porous defense. If the offense can play to their potential, there could be lots of points in their games.
Playoff Chances: Questionable
- Rick Moses: R-Mo started off white hot, but has lot four in a row. There does not seem to be anything wrong with his team. He has three
solid backs and a solid QB in Philly. His recievers are average. Thanks to his fast start, R-Mo has a few points in the bank, but he should
have no problem capturing second place. He's better than Bud, and his team will stop it's swoon. Playoff Chances: Probable.
- Deitrich:
Down years by Bud in this league are rare. It must be painful to comprehend that at 35 ppg, but is tracking 25 fewer points per game than his record
setting 2000 season. Denver is a solid QB; the rest of Bud's team is not solid. Fred Taylor has been the key. If we can return in time, Bud might
me able to do some damage in the division and steal second from R-Mo. Playoff Chances: Questionable.
- Jones/Klingman:
Thanks to the 7-1 start and a 4 game divisional lead, this is virtual lock, but stranger things have happened. Longtime BRFL watchers are stunned
by JK's championship and the 6-0 start. However, the secret to their success is they have the top QB in the league in Indy, the two top backs
in the league with Curtis Martin and Priest Holmes (Heads shake, "Priest Holmes?") and the second best kicker in the league with Jeff Wilkins
and the second best defense in the league with New Orleans. They play in the weakest division. Playoff Chances:Probably
- Cousins:
This we know, Cousins probably won't win the division. He has shown some life in recent weeks, and won a game, but he's ranked at the bottom in
scoring. The one thing that gives him hope is that R-Mo and Bud are only 2 games ahead of him and second place isn't out of the realm of
possibility. Playoff Chances:Doubtful
- Outlaw:
The 66 point outburst in week 8 reminded us of the Outlaw team we liked back in week 2. Outlaw's strength is his two solid backs in Stephen Davis
and Ahman Green. His rookies, Michael Bennett and Kevan Barlow have not stepped up. His recievers are hot and cold. His QBs are not having a
solid year. However, the long range outlook is shaky. This is a strong division, and Outlaw does not have many points in the bank. Playoff
Chances: Doubtful.
- Brad Moses: As I write this, Brad is shaking up his team through trades. So now what he relyed upon in the first half
might now longer be in place in the second half. The 5-3 record would mean something in the other divisions, here, he's in third, staying in the
hunt as a points qualifer, hoping that Rick and Ricker win division slots. If Moss sheds his first half bust label and if David Boston
lives up to expectations. Nevertheless, I have to rate his team as Questionable for the playoffs.
- Jackson:
Hidden in his 0-2 start and obscured by the success of B-Mo and DMC, is the fact that Jackson is the highest scoring team in the BRFL. The Jeff Garcia/
Terrell Owens combo is punishing opponents sometimes with 2 or 3 scores a week. He has an emergent rookie in Anthony Thomas, now carrying the
load for the surprising Bears. And there is Jimmy Smith, capable of big games at anytime. What Jackson needs to do is move Green Bay QB for
a competant back. Trade winds are now blowing throughout the league. What may go wrong is that SF's schedule toughens when division play returns.
However, CJ has a ton of points in the bank. Playoff Chances: Probable
- McCowan:
The last two weeks we have celebrated DMC for knocking off JK and his incredible comeback Monday night to survive Cantrell. He's in a tough
division, but points scored (like the BRFL season high 73 against JK) will help should Jackson and Brad Moses finish in the division slots.
Playoff Chances: Probable
Well, after back to back stinkers, I went 5-1 last week to up my season record to 27-20-1

Ricker vs Cousins
With the bitter taste of a loss to JK still in his mouth, Ricker draws Cousins and his Rams draw Carolina. This has the makings of a
blowout of epic proportions. Ricker welcomes Alstott and Dunn and routs Cousins.
|
Brown vs Outlaw
Nander separated himself from the pack last week while wining while the rest of his division lost. This week he faces another
last pace team and hopes to pad his lead. This week he gets Marshall Faulk back.
Which Outlaw shows up this week: The 66 point Outlaw of last week or the 14 point Outlaw of week 7. Whoever it is won't be a match for
Nander.
|
Cantrell vs Jones/Klingman
JK's backs, Priest Holmes and Curtis Martin will face off against each other and that should be a good thing. The Jets can't pass and
can't stop the run. Randy Moss and Mike Anderson are property of Brad Moses now, so Hank will start new acquisition Ricky Williams, but that
is about it. Expect JK to move to 8-1.
|
Best vs Jackson
These two hook up for the 22nd time. Best leads the series 12-9 with wins in the last four games. He's also coming off a bye week that had
Culpepper, Dillon and Carter off and he got hammered. The Vike combo faces a tough game in Philly, but Vikes usually play well after
a bye week.
Jackson is sitting in good shape with the 49'ers at home against the Saints, who defense hasn't been as solid as expected. I expect the
Terrell Owens to continue to show up his coach and score some TDs. The A-train will be rolling as well.
This will be a tight game, but I Jackson win his first game against Best since '98.
|
Rick Moses vs McCowan
Four straight losses and the R-Mo has to bust his streak against first place McCowan. It's a tall order. This is a match up of contrasts:
R-Mo has his big back attack of Alexander, Staley and Tomlinson and McCowan relys on top recievers Rod Smith and Marvin Harrison.
Edgerrin James may be back this week and R-Mo might be able to work him into the lineup. This is a tough call, but I lean towards
R-Mo to snap out of it.
|
Deitrich vs Brad Moses
I highlighted the fact that Bud is averaging 25 ppg less this year than last year. Cosider that an abberration. The 2000 season was over the top
as far as points produced. This year is mor in line with what we normally see. There is the ppg for all teams through week eight over six years.
- 2001 38.7
- 2000 44.6
- 1999 34.4
- 1998 36.9
- 1997 36.1
- 1996 35.3
Note that in '96 and '97 we were a 14 team league. The scoring rules have been pretty constant over that time period.
There is talk the Edgerrin James might return this week, and that would spell trouble for Bud's Dominic Rhodes. Fred Taylor is still a couple
weeks away. Denver QBs gets San Diego at home. The Chargers may be hot and cold, but they have a decent defense.
B-Mo has traded away Ricky Williams, the hero of two of his wins. Is that bad karma? Maybe, but it probably won't bother him this week.
Although he wants me to pick against him, B-Mo should have his way with Bud no matter what I decide.
