Mission #11 | ||||||||||
I was much afraid when I realized our position. We were in a position that could bring defeat to the mountain, and the overthrow of the long patrol. I, Tajon, was without hope for a while. Tammo and the other commanders (except Irongrip) had left the mountain, leaving me with just 20 soldiers. That is when the horde approached. I saw them from atop our mountain. They covered almost all that the eye could see, and a terrible lot they were. Rats, stoats, foxes, ferrets, and more, all approaching at a rapid pace, with only one goal, to overthrow Salamandastron! I quickly used our advantages to good use. We owned the mountain. We had the defensive advantage. We also had some of the best soldiers in the mountain, and we had Irongrip. We quickly began to conscruct weapons including catapults, ballistas, and boiling oil. We then built hundreds of javelins, arrows, and slings to arm our army. Finally we were ready. Or so we thought. The first attack began in the morning, just when the light of the rising sun rose, sending the vally and beach into sunlight, we saw the horde. It was bigger then we had possibly imagined. We quickly armed our catapults and launched them. The rocks slammed into their army, leaving patches which were soon filled. My heart was beating and Irongrip's sweaty paws gripped his sword. We watched as the horde suddenly charged up the mountain. We quickly counterattacked with a volley of javelins, arrows, slings, and ballista bolts. But the foe kept on approaching. When one vermin fell, another took its place. We were launching another volley when I heard Irongrip yell, "There attacking from the rear! We've been tricked!" I turned to see him running off down the passage way yelling, "SALAMANDASTRON! EULLALIA!" I ordered 10 soldiers to follow him while I cut down another beast. We were out of ballista bolts, and our catapults had been destroyed. Suddenly, a rain of flaming arrows flew towards us! We quickly tried to get inside, but many of my force was slain. The arrows burned bright and more and more came. I heard Irongrip yelling, "DIE VERMIN!" and the screams of many a foebeast. I guessed he and his squad had charged the enemy. Time and ammunition were running out. What remained of my squad threw javelins from the safety of an outcrop of rocks, but that limited us to waiting until the foes were very very near. Finally, in a scream that I believed was my last, I yelled, "FOR TAMMO! FOR SALAMANDASTRON! CHARGE!" and rushed out towards the horde. I expected to be killed instantly, but something happened. The vermin had suddenly stopped, and were looking up. I stared, and saw a huge stoat above me, about to crack my skull in with a mace and flail. I quickly threw my stick, and killed the brute. That must have been their leader, for the vermin I was fighting suddenly gave up heart and ran. I heard Irongrip yelling, "Cowards! COWARDS!" as the vermin ran down the firemountain. Suddenly they stopped in their tracks. A massive army of hares, squirrels, and mice suddenly appeared, led by Tammo! He had returned! The vermin screamed as they were charged, and from the mountain we rushed down to join the fight. After the battle was over, Tammo congratulated me, while Irongrip and I were tending our wounds. ---Tajon Barkfir |

Mission #4 | ||||||||||
I, Rockjaw, know spears will be of no use on this mission, so I borrow an enormous bow from the armory. Tammo sees me on my way up to the rooks' nest and chuckles at the sight of my bow. "So, you're going to wallop some bloomin' rooks, wot," he says. "That's right, sah, I'll give them a beatin' for 'em to remember." "No doubts there." says the deep, gruff voice of Irongrip. With that Im off to clear out those bally birds. As I wind my way up the mountain I think about how I should do this mission. First things first, string my bow. As I reach the top of Salamandastron the cries of the rooks echo around me. Finding a nice boulder to hide behind I settle down. A rook sentry is patrollin' these halls as if they belonged to him, blinkin' nerve. I line up my arrow and twang! One less rook to worry about. Unfortunately, the rook shrieked out and alerted the other birds. Nearly all the males were upon me in a flash. Using an arrow in each paw I managed to drive them back, but not before recieving a nesty gash along my side. Tearing some of my tunic off I bound the wound. Then, stringing my bow, I leapt out from behind the boulder and fired. Reloading and firing in a matter of seconds I eliminated another male. Soon all the males were dead. Except for one. He must have been the leader because he had been ordering the other males around. A well-placed arrow slew him. The females then gathered the young and departed hastily. Soon my wound caused me to faint due to loss of blood. I awok with Tammo standing over me, and Irongrip smirking behind him. Irongrip says, "Told you you'd beat them rooks." Tammo says, "Well done! How about a feast!" I reply, "Bring on the flippin' tuck! I could eat a rook!" ---Rockjaw Grang |

Mission #15 | ||||||||||
As I prepare for the upcoming duel many hares call out giving me advice or just saying good luck. The duel with the wildcat is to start at noon today. My friend Tammo walks in, closely followed by Irongrip. They are both extremely uptight due to the fact that if I lose Salamandastron will be shamed forever. "Are you sure you don't want any armor? The wildcat will surely wear some." asks Tammo. "No sah, armor'd only slow me down in this match. Same goes for the pussycat out there." I reply. "It is easy to joke around now, Rockjaw," warns Irongrip. "But in the duel it will be a totally different story." Tammo hands me my sling, which I had been looking for, as he says, "You show him that none can best a Salamandastron hare, especially one two times as big!" "Thank you for the vote of confidence, sah, I'll be on me bally way, wot!" "Be careful!" Shouts Irongip as I dash out. Out on the beach it is very bright. I wait to let my eyes adjust. Then I move towards the battle circle. The wildcat leaps out, snarling, from behind a dune. Calmly I say, "So you like flashy entrances, wot." He replies, "My sword will carve that stinking tongue from your head! Let the battle BEGIN!" With that he pulls out his sword and charges. I deflect his blow with my spear. Dancing back to the outer area of the circle he puts away his sword and pulls out a bow and an arrow. Stringing the bow, he fires at my head! Falling back I allow the arrow whiz inches over my face. "So you want ranged weapons!" I holler, pulling out my loaded sling. Shooting at his leg I miss! He had barely jumped out of the way. Stringing his bow as I load my sling, he fires. This time he hits me in my shoulder. In my pain I blindly swing my sling and fire. A loud crack brings me back to focus. I have snapped the wildcats bow in two! Pulling out his sword he lunges at me. He slashes at my right arm before I can knock him away with my spear. He charges again but I'm ready. A swift stab and he is run through! I win! I stagger back to Salamandastron but faint at the entrance. I come out of my faint aching all over. A healer tells me to drink a potion and I slip into blissful, dreamless sleep. ---Rockjaw Grang |
