Room 14 have been learning to play cricket. To
play cricket you need two sets of wickets
two bats and a ball. There are two batters on
the pitch, one at either end.
The idea is a bowler bowls the ball overarm to
the batter, who then hits it and tries to run
to the other end of the pitch to
the set of wickets there before the opposing team
hit the wickets with the ball.

The team who are waiting to catch the ball after it is hit are called the fielding team. Their job is to catch the ball without it bouncing and return it to the wicket keeper so he can hit the stumps. A wicket keeper stops the ball if it gets passed the batter and doesn't hit the stumps (wickets). The little horizontal bars on top of the wickets are the bails and these need to be knocked off to get a batter out. When you are batting you stand side on.

When you bowl a cricket ball you have a run up. You bowl with
a straight arm and need to keep your eye
on the wickets at the far end with your forward foot pointing
towards where you want to bowl the ball.

When the batter hits the ball and runs to the opposite end of the wicket it is called a run. The runs are counted until the whole team is out or the team declares..... this means they have a lot of runs and are finishing before all the team has batted.

Girls can play cricket too. In 2004 the New Zealand women's cricket team, the White Ferns, were the defending World Champions.
