have things good in
New Zealand compared to other countries. Our little sponsored child (World
Vision), Salapia Pastory of Tanzania, has died. She was only aged nine. She
contracted malaria which ultimately took her life. As I said to staff, we made a
difference to her short life through our sponsorship and this is a point needing
to be made to the children.
We will sponsor another
child. We will continue to make a difference as a school. This is one small way
of reaching out to others and having an outward focus.
The outward focus of our
faith and how this is demonstrated at
Middleton Grange Primary School is a critical element of our Christian
character. This has been a key factor in our special character review this year.
We will be discussing as a staff how we foster the outward focus of the children
here. How do we incorporate helping others
locally and further a field as a strong element of Christian service to others?
As an extension of the ‘assisting
parents to teach their children’
approach as conveyed through our vision statement, it is important that we as
parents encourage the outward focus through home. How are you encouraging your
children to reach out to others — not just friends but others in need in our
community or further a field. This can take all sorts of forms: through prayer,
assisting an elderly or sick neighbour, visiting someone in a rest home, helping
in a food bank, sponsoring a child …. This list is almost limitless. Your
church alone, can provide numerous opportunities to reach out. As Paul states in
Acts 20:35,
In
everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help
the weak, remembering the words that the Lord Jesus himself said, “It is
more blessed to give than to receive.”
We do need to be careful,
too, that we model for our children, the willingness to reach out to help
others. Giving money is one way of showing this but it is also critical
we show our outward focus through time and effort towards others. In a very fast
world that is not always easy!

Winter sport has just finished! It
has been a good season with some excellent results. Our sportswomen and
