I decided to add this section for all my friends who come to my webpage and go, "What the heck's Sailor Moon?" Sometimes just profiles of the characters aren't enough to tell a person what something's about!! So let's start at the beginning, shall we? (I'm skipping Sailor V stuff. I'll cover it in the season-by-season summaries.) A thousand years ago a culture flourished on our moon, a culture of peace and prosperity known as the Silver Millennium. The leader of this culture, a matriarchal society, was Queen Serenity. She had one heir, a daughter of the same name. Since this heir was important to the continued peace of the Universe, each planet was called upon to send a daughter to act as Princess Serenity's protectors, or Senshi. These Inner Senshi are Sailor Venus, Aino Minako (Mina for the dub version); Sailor Mercury, Mizuno Ami (Amy); Sailor Mars, Hino Rei (Raye); and Sailor Jupiter, Kino Makoto (Lita). The remaining planets' soldiers act as guardians against outside threats, with the exception of Sailor Pluto, Meioh Setsuna (Trista), who is the immortal Guardian of Time and is stationed at the Time Gate. The so-called Outer Senshi are Sailor Saturn, Tomoe Hotaru (Hotaru); Sailor Uranus, Tenoh Haruka (Amara); and Sailor Neptune, Kaioh Michiru (Michelle). Each Senshi is a princess of her respective planet, also. During the course of the Silver Millennium, relations between Earth and the Moon became estranged. Curious about the kingdom flourishing on the Moon, and perhaps hoping to soothe the tense situation, Prince Endymion of Earth decided to go visit; Earthlings weren't allowed on the Moon, so he had to go in secret. Disaster struck, for the Princess of the Moon and the Prince of Earth fell in love. Back on Earth, an evil woman by the name of Queen Beryl, backed by a mysterious force known as Empress Metallia, was taking over the planet. Endymion rushed back to Earth but was too late, for Beryl had already destroyed his planet and left for the Moon. Worried for his beloved, he returned to the Moon just in time to be killed by Beryl. The Princess rushed to his side and was also slain. Queen Serenity, heart broken, used the power of the ginzuishou (Silver Imperium Crystal), at the cost of her own life, to seal Empress Metallia's power and to send the Prince, Princess, Senshi and Beryl a thousand years into the future to be reborn. She put her two cat advisors, Luna and Artemis, into a deep sleep and sent them as well. Their instructions were to find Sailor Moon and the Moon Princess if Earth was ever threatened again. Jump forward to 1992 in Tokyo, Japan. Tsukino Usagi (Serena) is a ditzy eighth-grader who makes terrible grades and loves to eat. One day she is discovered by an awakened Luna and is told that she is the legendary warrior Sailor Moon. Through the first season, she collects her Inner Senshi and falls in love with a mysterious hero, Tuxedo Kamen (Tuxedo Mask, alter-ego Chiba Mamoru/Darien Shields). Later it is revealed that Usagi is the Moon Princess and that Tuxedo Kamen, Prince Endymion. During the second season, Sailormoon R, a mysterious child appears calling herself Tsukino Usagi. The group nicknames her Chiba-Usa (Rini), but her origins are shrouded in mystery. It turns out that she is Usagi and Mamoru's daughter from the future, a future known as Crystal Tokyo. In the thirtieth century Earth is awakened from a long sleep by the power of the Silver Imperium Crystal and transformed into an Utopia ruled by Neo-Queen Serenity and her husband King Endymion. Their daughter is known as Small Lady because in nine-hundred years she has not aged from a small child. In the third season, Sailormoon S, the Outer Senshi are introduced and Chibi-Usa returns to the past as Sailor Chibimoon. In the fifth season, Sailormoon SailorStars, three new Senshi make the scene. They are the Sailor Starlights: Sailor Starhealer, Yaten Kou; Sailor Starmaker, Taiki Kou; and Sailor Starfighter, Seiya Kou. They're different from the others for several reasons. First of all, while on Earth they pose as a boy band known as the Three Lights. Think the Backstreet Boys minus two. Also, when they change to their Senshi forms, they turn into women. How? Don't know. Why? Don't know. Moving on... they're on Earth in search of their lost princess, Princess Kakyuu (Fireball). So there's a basic overview of the general storyline of Sailor Moon. There were two hundred episodes and four movies, one of which being all about Ami. |
