Movie Director(s) My grade Bottom line
10 Things I Hate About You Gil Junger B+ The second film in a row that I've seen expecting more than the average viewer, and gotten more than I expected. Fun script, great acting, real characters, and Julia Stiles. I'm content!
The 13th Warrior John McTiernan B Not much plot, but McTiernan makes sure we don't care.
Almost Famous Cameron Crowe A+ The best film of the year. That may not be saying much, but it's the best movie of a lot of years.
American Beauty Sam Mendes A+ A beautiful work of art that may very well be the main show at the Oscars this year.
American Pie Paul Weitz C Girls will like the way the film pokes fun at guys. Some guys may like the gross-out humor. I was turned off by both.
American Pop Ralph Bakshi B+ A good story, wonderful animation, and an impassioned tribute to music.
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm Eric Radomski and Bruce W. Timm A Great story. Great script. Great acting. Great animation. Great movie.
The Blair Witch Project Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez B+ The scariest movie I've ever seen, possibly the scariest movie ever made, and the first film I've seen this year that absolutely must be at least nominated for Best Picture of 1999.
Blast From The Past Hugh Wilson B+ Funny, touching, and with a message too! Yours for just $7.75!
Bram Stoker's Dracula Francis Ford Coppola B Another "good, could have been great" quandary.
Cruel Intentions Roger Kumble A Intelligent, witty, clever, wicked, fun, and brilliant.
Dogma Kevin Smith A - Looks crappy, but brilliant writing and fantastic acting make that almost forgivable.
Drive Me Crazy John Schultz B Not as sharp as Cruel Intentions and not as well-shot as She's All That, but a fun, sweet film nevertheless.
Elizabeth Shekhar Kapur A+ A simply mesmerizing film that could have been twice as long and still been mesmerizing.
End of Days Peter Hyams B - Testosterone-pumping fun, but the film just tries to hard to be something it's not.
Erin Brockovich Steven Soderbergh A - The story's nothing new, but Soderbergh and Roberts breathe life into it.
The Faculty Robert Rodriguez B Some people actually go to the movies for fun. Those people will like this movie. But if you didn't like any of Williamson's or Rodriguez's equally fun projects (Scream, Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, et. al.) then you probably won't like this.
Get Carter Stephen T. Kay C - Confusing and way too stylistic, but the acting saves it from completely sucking.
Gladiator Ridley Scott A Ridley Scott does it again, creating a terrific masterpiece with great characters, real emotions, fantastic action, and a powerful finale.
Ghost World Terry Zwigoff A Alternately funny and heartbreaking, this is a brilliant film that features a wonderfully complex script and likewise wonderfully complex performances from a fantastic cast.
Heat Michael Mann A+ Michael Mann, one of our greatest directors, delivers an epic masterpiece that is easily one of the greatest films ever made.
The Hunt For Red October John McTiernan A+ McTiernan crafts a great film that, no matter how many times you see it, when it's done you realize you have no fingernails left.
The House On Haunted Hill William Malone F+ Could have been good, if they'd kept it simple and had fun with it. Unfortunately, the plot is completely convoluted and the film takes itself waaaay too seriously.
John Carpenter's Christine John Carpenter A A brilliant, atmospheric, gore-less, chilling thriller.
John Carpenter's Vampires John Carpenter C+ Carpenter-esque, but slow-moving.
John Q Nick Cassavetes C - Great acting, bad script.
The Last of the Mohicans Michael Mann A+ A beautiful, emotionally powerful epic from one of the most talented persons to ever step behind a camera.
Meet Joe Black Martin Brest A- Intimate, captivating, and thought-provoking.
Out of Sight Steven Soderbergh A A wonderfully written, acted, and directed film that has gone vastly unappreciated.
Reindeer Games John Frankenheimer B+ An energetic, fun film, with some great performances and some kick-ass action.
The Road To El Dorado Bibo Bergeron, Will Finn, Don Paul, and David Silverman B Good. But it could have been great.
She's All That Robert Iscove B+ Not as good as Cruel Intentions, but better than 10 Things I Hate About You. Worth watching just for the dance sequence.
The Sixth Sense M. Night Shyamalan A+ A wonderful, terribly sad film that has some of the best plotting and the best ending I've seen in a long time.
Star Trek: Insurrection Jonathan Frakes B- An okay film that could have been so much better, had the script developed the plot and the characters much more than it did.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace George Lucas B+ A weak script, poor use of great actors, and an oversaturation of computer effects. But you know what? It's still Star Wars.
The Story Of Us Rob Reiner B An achingly sad film that should not be watched when depressed -- but a beautiful one as well that should be watched.
Varsity Blues Brian Robbins A - Much more intelligent than it looks, plus great performances from Van Der Beek and Voight.
Wild Wild West Barry Sonnenfeld D The only good parts are the big mechanical spider and Will Smith's song "Wild Wild West," both of which are readily available on the trailer.
X-Men Bryan Singer A - If you can overlook a dumb-ass plan on Magneto's part and a couple gaping plot holes, then you will have a very, very good time at this movie.
