After I finished my Loden Doily, I took some time to learn some new techniques. I had already tried split rings, and was very pleased at how easy it was. (See my split ring dog collar!) The next step was split chains. I wouldn't say they are great fun, but they are easy enough since you'll probably only use them occasionally to branch out to the next round.

The pattern came from a fabulous page to learn about Split Chains, from Frivolous Frivolité. The great thing about this pattern is that it incorporates a split ring, a split chains, lock joins, Josephine knots, and even a false picot! It is great practice. And the instructions were so great that I didn't even bother practicing on a kilt pin! Don't be afraid to try (like I was...)

I like the way mine came out pointy on the outer ring, this is probably because I didn't pull my chains very tight (and they are lock joined to the inner chains) but I think it can be coaxed however you want. I sprayed it with water and ironed it to stiffen it. It would make a nice Christmas Ornament, wouldn't it? It took me a couple leisurely afternoons to do this motif.

I used 2 colors (hideous though they may be) for this motif, so I could show where the splits occurred. I used size 5 pearl cotton, and 2 shuttles were required. If only one color is used, you would never know where the splits were!
