The Rebels played as a more experienced travelling tournament team
in 2001 as we returned to
Las Vegas
for the third time to win a division championship this year. We
were not alone as the Bay Area's own Oakland Seals A
and Oakland Seals B teams won their division
championships as well. The Bay Area is a hockey hot bed for local
womens hockey!
We also returned to
Airdrie,
Canada to defend and win another tournament trophy.
The Winter
3-on-3 season began with the returning Champion Hot Biscuits,
Ice Queens, Rebels and a new fourth team named the Polar
Cats. The season turned out to be a two team race with an exciting
championship
game finish.
Meanwhile, our first-time trip to
Phoenix
during the May Memorial Day weekend had the team progress up
one level in tournament play. The evenly matched division also had
the Oakland Seals who returned home with the division's
championship. Congratulations to the Oakland Seals!
The Spring season had
the Rebels' 3-on-3 team out ready to challenge for the Womens Division
title again by winning three of its first four games and ending the
season with three victories. The Rebels won their
playoff
game in exciting fashion while a forfeit by the Polar Cats,
due to insufficient player lineup, gave the Rebels' 3-on-3 team its
fifth championship
title in the league's short history.
The Rebels 3-on-3 team took the summer off (only the second time in
three years) for player vacations and a new emerging power house, the
Spitfire, was making its presence known.
Returning to play hockey in the fall with the HTHL's Womens Division
collapsing to three teams, the Rebels 3-on-3 split time between two
very good goaltenders but were last in team scoring. Team defense,
-12 in goal differential for the season,, played near flawless hockey
in its final game
to provide the offense time to shine when the opportunities to score
arose. In the end, the Rebels could not do any better as a team.
They were near perfect AND now the HTHL 2001
Fall Champions!
The Rebels travelled to Tucson
for a mid-November womens hockey tournament hosted by the
Tucson Chilly Peppers and played at the Gateway Ice Center.
No trophy but the Rebels did not return home empty handed: the third
place medals will look just as good in the trophy case.
Rebels Spit Fire, a combination of players between the Rebels
and the Spitfire, travelled up the peninsula to
Redwood City
for the Tournament Trophy "Holiday Cup" Women's Tournament on
the December 28-30 weekend. No trophy but a lot of fun was had with
our new friends and team mates.
The Winter 5-on-5
season ended with our two squads qualifying for the playoffs. The
Rebels 2 squad (EE Div. team) advanced to the second playoff
round.
