Thomas Curtis and his family were from Timsbury in Hampshire. Mary Ann Pragnell was his second wife and Thomas married her in Michelmersh, Hampshire in 1834 after his first wife Fanny Leach died. Robert was a son from his first marriage to Fanny. The Curtis family settled in the Cooks River area to the south of Sydney, raising another 5 children there.
