From on Monday, 13 April, 2009

John Melbourne Gilbert married Harriet Elizer (sp?) Heath on 12 April 1858. He is listed as 22 years old and born in Melbourne. Under this it is written a note "December 29, 1835. The first white person born in Port Phillip". His status is bachelor and his occupation is Bullock driver. His parents are James Gilbert - blacksmith - and Mary Duff. Place of residence is Connewarre. Place of marriage is Christ Church, which I think is in Geelong.

Charles Phillip Gilbert, who signed with his Mark, wed Amelia Rebecca Quick on May 24, 1858. Charles Phillip is listed as 20 years old. His status is also bachelor and his occupation is also bullock driver. His parents are also James Gilbert - blacksmith - and Mary Duff who each could write their names. His usual place of residence is also down as Connewarre although he also had a 'present' place of residence listed as Brim Creek (I have searched this and I think that the spelling might be Bream Creek) and place of marriage is also Christ Church. Rebecca could write her name, was aged 20, born in Halworth, Surrey dau of Eliza Priddle and George Quick, a Publican, who are also parents of Eliza Quick died 1866 aged 48 and James Quick died 1888 aged 46.
Interestingly, witnesses to John Melbourne Gilbert's marriage are James Gilbert and Mary Gelley and witness to Charles Phillip's marriage appear to be James Gilbert and Mary Duff. I am yet to find death information on James and Mary Gilbert but do know that John Melbourne Gilbert issued no children from this marriage and remarried later in life, once again issuing no children. Charles Phillip Gilbert and Amelia Rebecca Quick had 9 children (details from Amelia's death certificate), one of whom was my great, great grandmother. See Web page on their first 2 daughters.
Both boys seemed to have moved to New South Wales. I don't know whether that was due to their occupation as bullock drivers or for some other reason. Gold rush perhaps?? John Melbourne eventually ended up settling in a place called Ravine as a grazier where he died in 1916 and was buried in Ravine Cemetery. Ravine, however, was reclaimed at some point and now no longer exists as a town. The NSW dept lists a Ravine Cemetery still although I haven't been able to get any more information. Ravine was apparently south west of Canberra, in the Tumut area. It is a pity to think that a person who appears to be of such historical importance to Melbourne has ended up buried and forgotten about in such an isolated place.
