By the end of 1839, Thomas Napier had taken out the first license for the land on the west side of Dandenong Creek opposite James Clow's Corhanwarrabul Station, building his hut somewhere in the present Jell's Park. After a year Napier was dissatisfied with the available pasture and sold his lease to Alexander Scott.

Corporal John Naylor, of the 4th (The King's Own) Regiment of Foot was born c1811 in Great Horton, Yorkshire, England had married Ann Caffrey (born c1819 in Belfast, Ireland) at St. Phillip's, Sydney on 18 July 1836.
John Naylor and his wife Anne has a son Charles Naylor born 10 April 1837 at Port Phillip and after the family returned to Sydney on the Revenue Cutter "Prince George", he was baptised 25 June 1837 at St. Phillip's, Sydney.
See note from the Port Phillip Pioneer Register, they later went to Belgaum, India ( where the next son Isaac was born c1840); Secunderabad, India ( where a daughter, Elizabeth was born c1842); Kamptee, India ( where the next son, John, was born c1846 ) and then back to England where a further son, William George was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire and baptised 7 April 1850 at St Thomas, Portsmouth. By the time of the 1851 census they were all living at Granby Barracks, Devonport in the census place of Stoke Damerel, Devonshire, England.
The Reverend Joseph Beazley Naylor 30 April 1837 preached in the church in William Street, solemnised the first marriage and also christened the son of James and Mary Gilbert, the first white child born at the Settlement, John Melbourne Gilbert. These were the first marriage and christening.
