Letter from on Fri, 22 Feb 2008
Dear Elizabeth,
Thank you for your reply,
Elijah Nobbs was an exile from Pentonville Prison and the "Maitland" was not only a passenger ship, but alternated as a prison Ship. The Maitland was destined to van Diemans land but was turned away from the port, as they did not want exiles as they were free on arrival and were paid men. Elijah ended up here in Victoria.

Elijah was christened at Morton on the Hill Norfolk England, his crime was stealing a horse from Mr Diggins of Walsingham Nfk. and he was sentenced to Pentonville Prison England for 7 years. Elijah married Mary Ann Sydenham at Brisbane Hill (A property near Hamilton Vic) in 1851 , Mary Ann arrived with her parents and siblings on the "Cornwall" 1848. The parents were from Devon England and the children were all christened Bristol area near Somerset. Florence Chuk has a book called "The Somerset Years" and it details early arrivals from there. I live in Port Fairy and belong to the genie group here, we did have a few ships come in here 6 I think? in the early days
---
Thankyou again and good luck on your project , I think its fantastic!!!!
Maria Cameron ps
Finding more about the exiles is very hard, convicts are quite easy, but not much is known about exiles, Elijah had been married in 1841 in England, had 2 children and then was able to marry here in 1851 with his 1st wife still being alive back in the UK. He was married by the Governer of the territory Ballentine Craig - Elijah is the bane of my life, he was supposed to have died August 1857 , but no record of death anywhere GRRR!!
