William Henry Oneil, male wed Bridget Gorman 1842 #4538 Church Of England St James, Melbourne
William Henry Oneil wed Bridget Gorman in 1842 at Church of England St James, Melbourne christened Mary 1844. See William O'Neill was transported to Tasmania as a convict in 1832 and had received a pardon in 1839. William O'Neill became engaged to Bridget Gorman (who came with her sister Alice Gorman wife of Martin Alfred Morgan on the Sir Charles Forbes) soon after she arrived in Melbourne. On the day of the wedding, O'Neill demanded £100 to proceed. Bridget, who was pregnant, refused and the Morgans sued O'Neil for breach of promise. The case, which was the first of its type in Victoria, was heard by Judge John Willis who commented on how unusual it was for "persons of the lower orders of society" to take such action. Bridget was awarded £100 damages but, nevertheless, proceeded to marry O'Neil on 9 April 1842. Two days later she gave birth to twins, and had 11 more children.

Adam Orange was born in America about 1812. He was an African-American who later became the cook at The Pier ‘Brighton on the Beach’ Hotel at Liardet Beach, Sandridge (now Port Melbourne). Evidence points to him being the first African-American in the Port Phillip District (now Victoria). After some years working as Frankston’s first official gardener, Adam Orange died of bronchitis and heart disease in the Gipps Ward Hospital, East Melbourne on 9 December 1889, aged 77. He had never married and his parentage was unknown. Once rumoured to be buried on the grounds of Ballam Park, his remains actually lie in an unmarked public grave in the Melbourne General Cemetery.
