Week 11: Upset after Upset
after Upset after Upset...
There has been a shake-up in the leagues shakiest divsion. 6-5 JK on the strength
of Olandis' Garys TD in overtime Monday night slips past Peil and into
first placein the BRFL East Division. the Mo-ha are also 6-5, but JK owns a
tiebreaker based on a win in week 1. Week 12 is the rematch.
East
Things get tighter in the leagues tightest divsion... Everyone has exactly
five losses.
Central
Nothing changes among the power elite as Wallace and Deitrich will play for
the probable title next week, however, each looks at the other's loss this week
and kicks himself for not being able to take advantage of it.
West
We may be sticking a fork in the old man by the end of the weekend. If Best
holds on, he'll gain a game, but Stroupe's point explosion buries him back
in the pack.
Possible Playoff Pairings
- 1 Dietrich vs 8 Stroupe
- 2 Jackson vs 7 Best
- 3 Jones Klingman vs 6 Outlaw
- 4 Wallace vs 5 Mosakowski-Hale
Did you know. That every game played in week 11 was an upset. That
includes JK/Peil. Peil was actually favored. Now, I don't have time to
dig back through the years and figure out if this has ever happened before.
Perhaps if I had some interns that could dig into league lore and find out for
me. Maybe we can come up with stats are arcane as this: In week 11 in the NFL
all games were played outdoors. Did weather causes the upsets? Don't ask
me.

This was a nip and tuck battle all weekend. Sunday night, Peil pulled ahead
thanks to the legs of SR QB, Billy Joe Toliver and the toe of Mike Hollis.
Monday night it came down to Olandis Gray vs Tim Brown. The game went into
overtime, usually when you feel it is decided by kicker. However, Gary pulled
this out when perhaps the entire league was asleep early Tuesday Morning.

This one came down to who would get more yards, Brunell or Jimmy Smith. Smith
got 220, earning him 9, but Brunell got 357 earning him a bonus point.
The Bud/Talbot featured the the team with the season's worse record beating the
team with the season's best record. The Mo-ha / Barry match up had an upset
on a grander scale. These teams have been in the league since 1995, and they are
the polar opposite. However, this week, the team with the worst all time active
record, beat the team with the best all time active record.

From a historical perspective this is not an upset. Nevermind that it involved the
team with the worst record defeating the team with the best record. Nevermind
that a 30 point underdog won this game. From a historical persepective Talbot always
beats Bud. It is almost written in stone. Talbot was paced by Ricky Watters,
who scored an amazing 21 points. Amazing for Talbot because in 9 of 10 weeks this
season his whole team never scored 20. Bud's drought could be attributed to lack of
Redskin fire power. The "Bud-skin" total output was Stephen Davis' 8 points.

Outlaw had one of those games that made you think, "Holy Crap he is
good." He has only shown flashes of excellence in a .500 season. His "James
Gang" scored 34 of his 59 points: Edgerrin James (21) and James Stewart (13).
Wallace is a lot like his Tennessee players: The score early and take the
rest of the game off.

These two played a chess match with chosing kickers leading up to the game.
The two they settled on will play tonight. Jackson figured Best for starting
Oakland and will started Ricky Dudley and Michael Husted to go with Ed McCaffery.
Best has former Jackson draftee, Jason Elam.
Elam more than held is own has Best increased his lead by 1.
As for a QB, Best opted for
Carolina at Cleveland it paid him with two scores from the QB and one for
Wesley Walls. He also got a score from JJ Johnson. Jackson opted for
Chicago's QBs and they scored and got him a bonus. Another was overrulled by
reversal. Both D/STs, the league's highest scoring, contributed TDs.

Pop the champagne! Ricky Williams scored...twice! Stroupe's rookie first
round pick took 11 weeks to hot pay dirt and it couldn't have come at a more
opportune time. This game was long over Sunday night when Ricky broke his
cherry, but Stroupe is into piling on the points. This weeks total propels
him past Peil and Czupryna and into the second points slot. Last season
Stroupe finished strong, but missed the playoffs because he was outscored
in the final weeks by CZ and AB. He seems intent on not letting that happen
this year.

Week 11 Preview -
Back to Division Play
Welcome back to division play... For the next four weeks, 11 of the 12 BRFL teams
will be positioning themselves for possible post season play. (Sorry, Talbot).
Here is the breakdown, division by division.
East
The tightest divsion by far is the East where only a game and a half separates
the four combatants. Mosakowski-Hale at 6-4 are the class of the division
and possibly the best team in the league despite their record. However, in two
losses, they scored 46 points and 39 in another. With a more favorable schedule,
they are 8-1. They play fading Barry twice.
Despite how strong the Mo-ha look, JK could actually win it on
tiebreakers. They beat the Mo-ha in week 1. Supposing they get by Peil this week,
they face the Mo-ha in week 12 with Green Bay's QBs playing at San Francisco.
In fact, Green Bay's schedule is very favorable if Brett Favre is up to the
task. He has been looking very mediocre lately.
I don't expect Peil to crack the top two, but currently he leads CZ in the
points race by one. That's the best I think he can hope for. The Vikings are
his meal ticket, but they have a bye this week, and that might set Peil
on an uphill climb to outscore his fellow geriatric the rest of the way.
Although AB is only a 1/2 away from second, he is showing little offense of
late. Randy Moss not steadily scoring and Jacksonville's O is missing, but is
not really required.
Central
The race is over in terms of who is in. No question it is Wallace and Bud.
Bud has the edge due to a half game lead and the fact that he plays Talbot twice.
However, week 12. Wallace and Bud square off. It is Wallace's only chance
at taking the division. He gets Tennessee at Cleveland. Deitrich gets
Washington at Philly. You will have to go deep into the roster to see
who wins this one. If Wallace does win, he has to take Outlaw again in week 14:
a bit tougher than this week vs Outlaw. If Bud wins in week 12, it's over.
But don't count out Outlaw... Last year, he was pretty low key and found
himself in the Super Bowl. His team is better this year, but is struggling.
Points are his ticket in, but he needs a couple wins to avoid a playoff
match up with Deitrich/Wallace. Ideally he needs a match up with Jackson in week 15
to advance to week 16.
West
Jackson looks good with a two game lead, but faces Best twice. CJ needs
a win over him in week 11, and the divison is virtually his. If there was such
a thing as "coach of the year" Jackson may deserve it. His SR moves and pick ups
have been right on the money. Usually he gets a little ham-handed and loses a
game of two due to over-managing. However, he has the touch this year. A win in
week 11, and he can screw around all he wants for the remainder of the
regular season.
The real race is for second. After a rough mid-season that included a loss
to lowly Talbot, Best got hot,
pounding Wallace and should have upset Bud last week. His team is looking good,
especially Cris Carter. Antowain Smith has had a good stretch and JJ Johnson is
suddenly "the man" in Miami. Week 11 is key if Best has dreams of taking the
division. Regardless, week 13 is very key when he squares off against CZ.
Czupryna is the hottest team in the league right now. His upset of the Mo-ha in
week 10 was a stunner. Taking their discarded QB, Seattle, he caught then
on a Sunday night. Seattle has Joey Galloway back and looks more potent than
ever, however their schedule gets a little tough the first three weeks of
division play. If he doesn't crack the top two, CZ may likely qualify
for the playoffs on points like he did last year.
Stroupe is floating along like he did last year: about 20 points outside
of a points slot. He missed it in '98 when CZ and Barry got red hot the last couple
weeks down the stretch. I don't see him catching Outlaw or CZ on points.
Prediction
- East: 1, Mo-ha (9-5) 2. JK (7-7)
- Central: 1. Wallace (11-2-1) 2. Deitrich (11-3)
- West: Jackson (9-5) Best (8-6)
- Points: Outlaw (6-8) CZ (6-8)
- Week 15 predicted Match-ups
- 1 Wallace vs 8 CZ
- 2 Mo-ha vs 7 Outlaw
- 3 Jackson vs 6 JK
- 4 Bud vs 5 Best
4-2 last week. 34-24-2 .583 on the season.
Mosakowski-Hale (-20) vs Barry
Are you kidding. St Louis vs San Fran? Five QB TDs last time, 4 to Bruce?
Mo-ha.
Jones-Klingman (+2) vs Peil
Peil favored here, but without Vikes QBs. JK is in trouble. Brett Favre is looking
ordinary. Collins hurt. APB out on their receivers. Only Olandis Gary and
the silly "D of the week" strategy working. Hey, Klingman, you can't SR ECU's
D... JK only had 9 last week. Should be enough this week.
Outlaw (+10) vs Wallace
Despite a good team, Outlaw is out of it in the Central. Playing for points, but
won't get much with New England at Miami. Wallace sets up "show down
in the central" for week 12.
Talbot (+30) vs Deitrich
Is Talbot still in the league? Washington gets the Giants again. The "Bud Skins"
scored 37 points last time. Talbot might be able to beat the spread.
Bud.
Czupryna (-1.5) vs Stroupe
Th Old Man is riding high with Seattle, but a tough game this week. Stroupe
gets Peyton thrashing Philly. Good move snagging Pittman. Is Ricky the
virgin going finally to score? Won't need to. Stroupe Upset special
makes it two in a row over the "family".
Jackson (-5) vs Best
Last week, Best faced Bud. This week it is Miller time. As in Jim Miller of
Chicago. Jackson claimed them this week, and expects production verses
San Diego. Best stakes his claim on Carolina at Cleveland. Expect Best
to edge CJ as things tighten in the West.
