1999 BRFL Week 14 Results

Mo-ha Wins East
Brings Peil with Them

All of Jacksonville's scores were on the ground, allowing the Mo-ha (8-6) to hold off Barry's Jacksonville QB and preserve a 32-24 win that gives them the East Division title. Peil (6-6-1) finishs in a tie for second with Jones-Klingman (7-7). JK wins the tiebreaker thanks to a head to head sweep over Peil. That includes this weeks 61-38 romp. Peil will earn the second points slot. AB (6-7-1) is the odd man out in a division that surprisingly sends three into the playoffs despite being derided most of the season as mediocre.

Games in the East will continue into week 15 as bitter rivals Mo-ha and JK will square off as the third and sixth seeds. Peil will be the 7th seed and will face Best.

Wallace wins Controversial Central

OUT box score - WAL box score
Wallace and Deitrich were criticized for taking it soft on foes when division play returned, but this week, they quieted those critics. Wallace is pounding Outlaw 59-38. New pick ups Priest Holmes and Baltimore QBs. A few eyebrows were raised when Wallace cut fantasy stalwarts Jerome Bettis and Johnny Morton for these apparent flavors of the week, but they cam through big. Also and early boost by Eddie George Thursday got things rolling.

TAL box score - BUD box score
Bud broke the Talbot jinx and broke it big 67-3. Bengals and Redskins scoring big there. Interestingly enough, neither Outlaw or Talbot were too interested in putting up a fight. Outlaw started Curtis Enis, who is on a bye and Talbot started the disgraced and former Dallas kicker, Richie Cunningham.

Among non-playoff teams, Outlaw has the most points. He also has the worst record amongst the non-division winners and will be seeded eighth. His reward, a week 15 game with Wallace.

Best Best in the West

CJ box score - BST box score
Jackson is probably fuming about the failure of the "right of first refusal" rule proposal. Jackson lost SR Carolina QBs in week 6 after they scored 25 points for him in a special reserve role. He lost them to division rival Best who claimed them and used them this week (25 points again) to crush Jackson. The score was 52-8. Two games back entering divisional play, Best rolled through the division 4-0 including two wins over Jackson. Last year Best lost the division to Jackson on tie breakers (head to Head points). This year he wins it on tiebreakers (head to head sweep).

CZ box score - STP box score
The undercard, Stroupe 41 Czupryna 30, was rendered meaningless when JK won. The winner would have made the playoffs as the last points qualifier had Peil and the Mo-ha won. It is just as well, both teams finished 4-10.

Week 15 playoffs

  • 1 Wallace (10-3-1) vs 8 Outlaw (6-8)
  • 2 Best (9-5) vs 7 Peil (6-6-2)
  • 3 Mo-ha (8-6) vs 6 Jones-Klingman (7-7)
  • 4 Deitrich (10-4) vs 5 Jackson (9-5)

Games ending in ties will count as ties, but the higher seed will advance to the next round. No tie-breaker in week 17.

Week 14 Preview

The final week of the regular season. Every division is up for grabs. Eleven teams have some sort of shot. Divsion by Division here is how it looks:

The East

What a mess. The only team guaranteed to make it is the Mo-ha. They have the most points in the league (582), so they can get a points slot. Peil has good points (449), but his nightmare scenario is that AB and JK claim the two slots, forcing him into a points contest with Outlaw who has a 39 point cushion. AB and JK have to win to get in.

The Central

Long since decided who is going in, it is just a matter of order. Wallace has a 1/2 game lead over Deitrich going into week 14. Outlaw has a comfortable points lead over Peil, but if Peil outscores him by 40 and still loses his game: Outlaw is out. Very unlikely.

The West

Jackson and Best play for the title. Czupryna and Stroupe play with an outside shot at a points slot provided Peil and Mosakowski win division slots in the East. CZ has a slight lead in points 416-412

Last week another 4-2. Season record: 45-31-2

Mosakowski-Hale (-18) vs Barry

What going on with the Mo-ha? They've lost 3 of their last 4 and save some lineup screw-ups by JK in week 12, it would be 4 of 4. Fortunately their point total makes them invulnerable to missing the playoffs. However, this little slump has them worried. Not a lot of smack in the forum lately.

I guess the first question you ask about Barry is "where did he come from". He's kind of been hanging around the back of the pack waiting for the leaders to come to him. Two things have benefited him. One, the offensive emergence of Jacksonville. Secondly, he found his old pal Darney Scott in the discard pile and scooped him up and Scott has paid off with two good games.

The Mo-ha are too good to spin down the drain. The guess is that they win thanks to Jimmy Smith, who will keep Brunell in check Monday night.

Jones-Klingman (+5) vs Peil

JK can't win the division, but they can get into the playoffs provided that they win this game. They own tiebreakers over the rest of the division either in head to head or via division record. Favre will be facing the Panther D and should put up some numbers. If not, newly acquired De'Mond Parker could also have a good day against the Panthers.

Peil's resurgence had been for the most part made possible by the play of Jeff George. Last week, the rest of of the lineup stepped up and Peil had guys he hadn't played in months having good games. It was fortunate too, as the Vikes hada sub-par game. The possibility exists this week that the Vikes may be a little down again at KC.

The prediction here is that JK loads up on his Packers and makes his way into the playoffs.

Outlaw (+6) vs Wallace

I'm looking this game over, and I'm thinking...What has Wallace got? His best chance maybe Thursday night, but Wallace never, ever plays guys early. He's more apt to pass on the Titans and take his chances with a late SR. Outlaw looks a little better. New England at Indy. Outlaw has got to notice the numbers that Indy gives up, they allow Edgerrin James to run wild. Maybe he switches to Miami given the numbers they put up last week. Outlaw to pull the upset and get back to .500 and make our playoffs look respectable.

Talbot (+23) vs Deitrich

Here's Bud's chance to step up, and guess what? His nemesis, Talbot, stands in his way. Can Bud overcome his problem with Talbot and step up and win the division. He most likely can. In his best case scenario, Arizona/Washington is a shootout and he loads up. He also has Corey "I'm always hot in December" Dillon versus the Browns.

Jake the Snake may score for Talbot, but as he learned last week, he has guys that can "get it to the one but can't get it done". Robert Smith and Frank Sanders got a snootful of chalk, but nothing leather broke the plane. The pick here is Bud. For once Talbot won't spoil the party.

Czupryna (pick) vs Stroupe

For weeks we've been digging the graves of these two, but surprise surprise, one of these guys will make the playoffs if both Peil and Mo-ha win this week in the East. Whats open to them is the final points slot. Czupryna leads by four. Therefore a possibility exists that CZ, could lose this game by three or less and still make it in depite losing four straight and owning a 4-10 record. I expect to see an entertaining game with both teams - dome QBs at home against poor road teams scoring like crazy. As far as the rest of the line-ups are concerned, injuries still dog Stroupe including Ricky Williams, who hasn't played since his first TDs of the season in Stroupe's 65-26 win over CZ in week 11. Since that, CZ has outscored the next couple weeks to pull back ahead in the points chase. The trend continues. CZ to get the win, the points, but based on previous predications, miss the playoffs.

Jackson (-3) vs Best

The two franchies with the most wins in BRFL history are going at it this week for the division title. Early in the season, it looked as if the West would be the screwed up divison, but the complete opposite has happened. These two teams have been the steadiest in recent weeks. Jackson has won 3 of 4 (only losing to Best in week 11) and Best has been averaging 50 points over the last 50 weeks. Their success has been similar. Neither team is playing with the QBs they drafted.

Match-ups are not kind to Best this week. Jackson has either Atlanta at SF or Cincinnati hone against Cleveland. Slight edge to Calvin to deny Best a divsion two straight years.
